How deep does it have to be to get stitches...

Seppeku by chisel is not an honorable resolution on BFC despite your shame for fearing stitches.

Good thing you didn't damage any bodyart.

Please avoid swords, cleavers, and firearms until you get some rest.

:D ;) :D

Seriously though, hope you heal soon.
Years ago, I had a cabinet shop. Consider myself fortunate to still have all my parts. Keep your eye (inner and outer) on the point. :)

For future reference, it's generally not how 'deep' the cut is (as long as you don't hit something vital, which is a different thing altogether), it's whether or not you can get the edges of the cut back together so that the skin can mend itself correctly. Usually, if you've got a gaping (3/16"-1/4" wide) cut, it needs some attention with sutures, staples, or medical super glue.

PS: I'm not a doctor, but I once stayed at a Holiday Inn.

Basically, I go by a short list.

1. Can it be closed with finger pressure/butterflies? If YES, go to 2. If NO, go to hospital.
2. Can the bleeding be stopped within a short time frame (~2 minutes)? If YES, go to 3. If NO, go to hospital.
3. Do I have a recent tetanus shot? If YES, go to 4. If NO, go to hospital.
4. Can this be closed and cared for with household gear (butterflies/tape/shim for splint)? If YES, stay home. If NO, go to hospital.

Reminds me of the Julia Childs skit on the old Sat Nite Live! Also, remember - you hold the round (handle) end of the chisel when using ! :D
Glad you're OK.

Handle? There's a handle?!? j/k!! :D

Heh, yeah I think I saw that skit! Anyways, thanks, I'm ok just embarrassed :D

I used to box and we used derma/superglue all the time for minor cuts to stop the bleeding quickly and close the cut.

Ive use plain ole superglue on myself for a few cuts, some of them pretty big curtesy of my BM42.

(According to my sister who has been an E.R. nurse for the last 10 years, superglue is almost identical to the dermabond they use and is relatively safe for use on cuts as long as they have been properly irrigated/cleaned)

Sorry to hear you had a bad day.

plain superglue works great but it has a bit of cyanide in it (no kidding) so they've been using a medical gread superglue minus the cyanide for awhile now. you can even buy it over the counter in a good pharmacy.

in a pinch, regular superglue won't hurt you at all. you'd have to use a whole heck of it for an extended period of time to get cyanide poisoning.

Do a search online for dermabond. You can get it for about $50.

I hope you got a good insurance plan or else that ER visit is gonna hurt your knife budget!

I hear you about the fear of needles. I'm getting better, but still flip out when it's time for that yearly flu shot. No more of that crap now that I'm getting out of the Army. :) Glad to hear you're all right.

Cuts, broken bones, etc don't really bother me...

they put me in some kinda plastic tent for a week, and gave me shots and took blood like 10 times a day for a week. :(

Top five things we learned from this post......
1) from the time of his original post, we conclude that he is up playing with a chisel when he should be sleeping.
2) he probably got blood all over the keyboard when he was bleeding, errr, typing the message
3) NELSONMC IS A BUBBLE BOY!!!!! (see quote above and ....be a Seinfeld fan to get this one)
4) The medical staff was laughing at him because: a) the first wound appeared to have started to heal when he arrived for treatment of tthe second wound. b) They had read his chart and knew he was a bubble boy c) he sat on the bed flipping a Balisong as he awaited his Dermabond.
5) Nelsonmc is no stranger to massive blood loss.

Just having fun with you Nelonmc, It is good to hear that I'm not the only knucklehead that has drawn blood and felt like a moron for it. I hope you are okay and on your way to a speedy recovery.

Hahaha COSMO I'm using that as my signature from now on. You crack me up! :D

Edit: Damnit, it's too long for my signature, argh!

Dermabond is 2-Octyl Cyanoacrylate. Super glue is Ethyl 2-Cyanoacrylate. (according to google search).

So they both have the "cyano" thing. I bet the only difference is price because the medical grade stuff is manufactured in a sterile environment where the other stuff isn't.

It doesn't matter how deep it is if you're the one making the decision, it'sjust a matter of how you want it to heal. It is my experience that stitched wounds leave smaller (and less ugly) scars if done right.

I found this page on superglue usage in midwifery which discusses toxicity of different superglues if anyone's interested?
Luckily, in the UK our medical care is covered in our taxes and I haven't needed stitches or glue yet.

Glad you're OK nelsonmc!

Thanks, I'm fine, still laughing about the whole thing. Yeah I wish our taxes went for something other than making the rich richer, crackhead welfare programs, and bombs. Luckily I didn't have to pay for anything but the copay for the visit itself.

Chicks DIG scars! You can also make up your own stories to go with them. Self inflicted stuff doesn't seem to impress them at all. LOL The bigger the scar the more outragous the story can be.

My chick doesn't dig scars, she rolls her eyes and tolerates them (barely). Last good one was about a month ago, visiting Granny in the Hospital (knee replacement, nothing critical). She handed me a heavily taped manila envelope. I pulled my brand spanking new and razor sharp ss handled BM41 out of it's G2 sheath and did a sharp double flip opening. Seems I'd not oriented the knife properly when last I sheathed it, and I'd grabbed the bite handle. Guillotined it right across the back of my index finger knuckle, 1st out from the hand. I finished opening Grannys envelope, and went to the sink, broke a cig up for a quickie tobacco polutice, and duct taped it up tight (you guys all keep a few feet of 100mph taped folded up in your wallets, right?). It's just now closed up, but up until a couple of days ago, I could still see the capsule, with a 1/2cm slit in it, sliding back and forth under the fascia. A little stiff, but no loss of grip/trigger strength, and I'm pretty sure the stiffness will fade.
