How did he make that pattern?

Hi all,

I was browsing the swords section and came across this post:

Does anyone have any clue on how this pattern is made? I really dig it but for the life of me can't figure out how it's done.... all thoughts appreciated.

He painted those flames on with a resistant, then etched the entire blade. Resistant covered areas remained "high" while the rest got etched away, leaving whatever he painted as a pattern.

I already had a suspicion, but I was hoping that it was not the case and that he had used some very nifty method of creating a Damascus pattern like that. That would have been really awesome. Ah well....

According to the article, that is forge welded.

The blade is forge welded. The flamed edge is etched. Take a close look at it.
