Hello one and all,

I'm new to this forum, 2nd day, and wanted to get some feed back as to how my choice of a first "survival" knife is. I recently Purchased a BK2 and have researched and read TON's of information about it and everythings has been good so far! Anyone have any complaints about it? I guess, I just wanted to see your guys' take on it, and any combo of tools you take with it or anything that would help a "newb" out. I am completely stoked about the bk2, it arrives tomorrow! I bought my girlfriend the BK11 and she really loves it and it seems like a good stout knife for its size. I am new to the whole knife world, and the only one I have is a beautiful hand made knife my good friend made me for my 21st birthday. He's a journeyman Smith and makes quality blades. Aside from that the BK2 will be my first baby that I will use. Thanks for any and all feed back.

Welcome to the Becker forum and Bladeforums, Leon, glad you're here.

Not too many complaints on the BK2 from me, but I'm biased. The biggest complaint that I hear is the thickness. I don't think it much of a problem, you will feel the heft of the blade, but the balance is perfect, and the 2 is quite nice to hold.

A great addition to your would be a folding pack saw of some kind, and some other woodland supplies. There is a ton of info here and in the Wilderness Survival and Skills forum, located in the Community forums, I would suggest you check them out as well as the Gear and Gadgest Forum. You will really just have to start and find out what works for you and your area.

What are you planning on doing? Hiking, camping, hunting, fishing? Practicing your survival skills? You may want to look into finding a wilderness skills school, or group in your area to learn some.

Good luck, and glad you posted with us, we are glad you chose us.

Feel free to ask us any questions.

Welcome! Great choice on the BK2, bud. Certainly a stout and well-built knife that will serve you well outdoors. Post up some pics when you get a chance!

Welcome! I also bought a BK2 after researching, I can think of no negatives...Keep it sharp and it won't seem too thick.

Thank you for the the welcoming everyone, much appreciated. I'm waiting around the house today for the bk2 to come! Feel like a giddy little school boy.

Its strange buying one knife....you just can't, after buying the bk2, I bought a Kabar Heavy Duty Warthog and a CS Bushman Bowie (for a b.o.b.). I have never been the type of person to buy a lot of things, especially something such as knives, where the average person would think all you need is one. It's funny because my girlfriend loves to buy Purses, the expensive ones! and I could never understand why she has or needs so many damn purses and I gave her a hard time about it, until she finally saw me ordering all these knives, she told me the same thing and we quickly came to a deal where I wont give her crap for her purses and she wont give me crap for my knives.

The bk2 seems awesome, the thick blade is what drew me to it to begin with. I have been working construction my whole life so I know how awesome having a reliable tough tool is, and the bk2 seems to be just that.

Anyone have any suggestions for a good starter pocket knife?

Ahhh yes, a folder, sorry for the confusion...However, I will look into the bk14 as well, never thought of something like that.

Just wanted to say that the bk2 FINALLY ARRIVED! ! it is a beast, went in the back and split some wood and the thing just ripped right through the wood. I baton it 2 or 3 times and the rest of the log would split....AWESOMENESS!

Took some pic, just need to figure out how to post them real quick

You'll love the BK2 - it is one heck of a goto knife. As to a good starter pocket knife, for very little money, I can't see how you could possibly go wrong with a KaBar Dozier like this one (poised to open a box with a nice new BK11 and BK14 - heh)...

Welcome to the addiction.

I also carry the BK14 in my pocket, but if your looking for a good folder, you can't go wrong with a swiss army knife from Victorinox. My favorite is the Farmer model.

Welcome, come on in the house. Lots and lots of good info on here. Got any olives?

The Cold Steel Triad lock folders were my first start, I got a Recon 1 clip point. I would recommend the Recon 1, Large AK, Small AK, or the American Lawman. The folders are great, durable, and relatively cheap. I rotate between them and the BK-11.

Oh, and welcome to Beckerland.
-Josh

EDIT:

Other great folders (linerlocks) , especially for the price:

-Ontario Rat 1 (Best IMHO)
-Spyderco Tenacious (a not so comfy handle)
-Kershaw Skyline (Very thin blade)

You could also go to Neck knives, to name a few:

-Becker BK-11
-Becker Bk-14
-ESEE Izula
-ESEE Izula 2

First off, welcome. Glad you joined us.

I can't speak for everyone here in the Becker forum, but if you're anything like me, that bug will be bitin' ya for the rest of your life, and it won't be just a Becker-bug. For a lot of us, the concept of having "too many" knives just does not compute, and whether you're waiting for your first decent quality knife, or your hundredth, that giddyness will surface for every one of 'em.

Just so happens that I'll be gettin' my third BK2 in the mail today. I work graveyards and usually sleep during the day, but not today, no sir! Probably couldn't even if I tried, but damn, it's gonna be stormin' here this afternoon and what kind of Dad would I be if I left my newborn baby out in the mailbox until I woke up? :D

Sounds like you're hangin' around way too many below average people!

It is tough indeed. Are you planning on using it for work? What kind of construction do you do? Answering that will help folks answer your other question about a decent folder or smaller fixed blade.

Anyone have any suggestions for a good starter pocket knife?

If you picked 20 different user names at random and asked this question of them, you'd likely get at least 20 different answers without anyone knowing what your intended uses are. Also pertinent to the question is what your budget is, how important blade steel is to you (if at all), whether you've studied the different kinds of locking systems and have a preference, or maybe you really just want/need a non-locking knife. I think it's safe to say that on a working man's budget, you can find something that you can afford and that suits your needs if you stick with mass production manufacturers like Kershaw, Benchmade and Spyderco. Someone else said Cold Steel, and I wouldn't argue with that either, though I don't own any of their folders (and never have.....yet), so I can't offer advice one way or the other with them. There's a few other names with a wide range of price-points and of selections of blade styles and steels, locking systems, and handle materials. Having an idea of your needs will help us help you narrow your "perfect" choices down.

Set a spell and soak up the knowledge. There's lots to be had around here. See ya 'round.

I work graveyards

They have tombstones with keyboards now? Impressive.

On topic, what answer did you expect coming to the Becker forum, asking if it was a good decision to buy a Becker knife? I think we both know.

Well, welcome to the madness anyways. Get comfortable and hurry up so you get your sub-100 Beckerhead #!

take care

Leon,

Excellent choice with the BK2 !!!

however a 'survival' knife could be defined as a flint or simply something from your kitchen drawer:p

happy trails

First off,

Thank you everyone for the quick replies and good information in regards to a pocket knife.

Blue- To answer a question about using a folder for work....Yeaaah, I will use it, but I think I'm considering a knife that I can beat up; open Packages, pop off beer caps, cutting twine, something that would be useful for everyday sort of "work man's" work, does that make since? Something durable, affordable and can get me more into knowing what will be more useful to me...an "experimental" folder if you will. Anyhoo, thanks again everyone for your input and help much appreciated!
