How did it all start?

Needed a knife when ya went hunting cause that's something the men carried. My dad gave me my first knife when I was 5, a kansas kane cutter 2, still have it. Then I saved up my allowance for a while and got a SAK at walmart when I was 8. By the age 10 I bought myself a case hunting knife(orange rubber handle, orange camo sheath) and that's when I was hooked.

My grandpa gave me a small lock back (no name brand) when I was like 9 and I thought it was so cool. Then my sister brought me back a Wenger SAK she found under a bed at summer camp (it was super cool cause it had a musket etched into the handle). Still have them both.

Then A buddy had a Smith and wesson swat knife that I thought was the sweetest thing ever so I got one and it was my first "big" knife and I carried it for years.

Got a Gerber Gator and Chameleon and carried them for a while.

Then I got hooked on Kershaw AOs and got a Blackout and Scallion.

Then I got a KABAR USMC as my first fixed blade,

And ever since I kept going...

Started with guns....then old guns, loved the work and detail that went into them, now it's knives for the same reason.

As a young boy I grew up hearing stories from my Opa (grandfather) about his time fighting the Japanese in the Jungles of Indonesia were he was born. He always spoke of these great knives called Khukuris, Kris's and American made military knives. One story he used to tell was when the Gurkha's used their khuk's to liberate the concentration camps by beheading the Japanese officers. His stories always freaked me out but started my interest in knives for some reason. I have been lucky to receive my grandfather's collection of Japanese swords, khuk's, Kris's and some old US made military knives. My "obsession/disease" continues with my interest in all sorts of modern day knives.

In our family everybody worked on the farm, hunted, and we had a drawer in the kitchen just for knives. I inherited a puuko from Bodo, Norway that my dad got from his uncle. To own it we both had to fillet our first fish, as the knife had a fish head handle and the sheath was the body. It destroyed me the day I lost it gopher hunting (the cows or horses knocked over the bucket it was in and took/ate it. I have actually worked on the design in the last week so that I could remake it sometime soon for my son (my 4 year old already earned her own knife).

I am hanging at knife forumes to pester them.

troll much? :jerkit::thumbdn:

I guess i got started when i got my first CRKT m-16

loved it, i got the AUS-8, tanto version and still have it, though the lock is about to go.
my first "real knife" was the scrapper 5 i picked up last august and it been a snowball from there

I saw first MacGyver episode when I was around 7 . I got my first pocket knife after that. So I say it was due MacGyver. Still one of my favorite TV show's ever.

My grandfather collected them. He passed away when I was 5. My cousin and I used to find the key to gran's cupboard where she kept them and fiddle with the knives. I was well under 10 at the time. Been a knife nut ever since - in the blood.

My first knife I won in a cub scout contest. It was a SAK knock off and I hated it (but I still have it!). I could barely even open it because the springs were so tough and my second grader hands were so weak. I eventually lost it for many years and never really missed it.

I had an older cousin that I looked up to and he had a couple of knives always layin around. One day he gave me a little 3 blade buck knife and I loved it. I carried that with me all the time. However, one day I was doing some pretty hard use with it when it folded on my finger. That scared the shit out of me.

I knew my dads knives had fancy locks on them to keep them from folding (he mostly carrried an old school benchmade osbourne). After the accident with the buck, I wanted a locking folder so I got myself a S&W SWAT knife and abused it to death.

Its been uphill since...;)

My first real knives were a pair of Japan made Beretta branded knives. I have no idea what blade steel it has but it came razor sharp. Aside from razor blades and exacto knives, I didn't realize how sharp knives could be. So in order to sharpen these knives, I discovered the Sharpmaker. I joined the forum to learn to sharpen and I was completely hooked.

It started before I could even walk, I was facinated by my mother's kitchen knives, and then took one for my toy box.

Mother told me that I kept repeatedly taking the knife, eventually dad ground off the edge and let me keep it. That way she could stop me from taking the sharp ones.

When I turned 9 or 10 my grandparents gave me a SAK Executive, thought it was the sweetest thing ever. After that I bought a couple of cheap knives at Target, used and lost both of them. Around the time I turned 18 I had been lurking one of the more infamous websites and it's weapons board. Every time I saw a knife thread it seemed like everyone kept saying buy a Benchmade. So I go to a store and buy my first Benchmade (10750). EDC'd it for a year and a half and been buying knives since (hurts my wallet because I'm a college student now).

It all started with grandpaps Camillus Barlow. Watching him swirl the blade on a whetstone followed with shaving his arms simply amazed me at age 4. He gave me my first knife at age 5 (a blue jigged bone BoyScouts knife) and sharpened it for me. The stern warning "Be Careful...its Sharp. You'll cut a finger off if you're not!" was the most gruff I'd ever heard from him. A week later he was still wrong cuz I'd only managed to nearly cut my thumb off (only seven stitches :) ) I bought another Camillus from a friend at 6, and a Case Trapper for Dad at age 9. Bought a Pacific Cutlery Balisong by mail order in 1985... the lil KaBar was confiscated from an uncaring idjit several years ago. Many knives in between then and now but the slippies will never leave me until I leave this earth for good.

Mine has been fairly recent. In my family, guns are a no-no and knives belong in the kitchen. Despite that, I've been into guns and military stuff since I was really little. At the time, knives were kinda cool but they were just secondary to guns. I got a little knock-off SAK when I was probably 12, but that didn't really change anything. During my first year of college I bought a Gerber Paraframe II that I half-heartedly EDC'ed for a year and a half. Then I started watching Nutnfancy's hiking videos and I saw all that you could do with a knife. I was hooked then, and when I got my first fixed blade that did it for me. Haven't looked back since that happened about 5 months ago.

I first got a meryerco that my brother gave me. Was not a bad knife and I used it on the job quite a bit. Bought a bunch of cheap knives after that since I didn't know better. I used to carry a gerber ez-out but ended up trading it for a benchmade pikka in 440C. Then I started to get interested in steel so I tought I should try different stuff. So I bought an Endura and an Extrema Ratio Fulcrumm II. And now I have traded a lot of knifes in a small amount of time. But I still have my endura, my first real good knife. But that led me into buying a small seb, an F1, a mini-grip, a case sod buster jr, a wenger SI and quite a lot of others. I also made a knife out of a nicholson file that didn't turned out so bad. And now I'm waiting on my Izula and thinking of a Game warden...

when my uncle first started taking me to gunshows. I looked at all the interesting knives that were in tanto points with that rainbow finish, and the set of those throwing knives and then I got my first $10 balisong. I looked online at youtube videos and discoverd nutnfancy. I looked up the knives he was reviewing and liked them. Then I watched cutlerylovers videos and I picked up a then called RAT Cutlery RC-4. After the collection grew, I traded, I learned and then I found this site. And this all started a couple of years ago.
