How did this happen?

I didn't expect my post to generate bids for him. I would not recommend bidding on the knife since he falsely described it as lightly used.

My theory: Somebody had a few too many, began working on a cut-out for EZ-Open but worked on the blade instead of the handle....:D:eek: Same figure had a few more and then took the pictures, "looks minty to my glazed eye"

I got hold of a knife recently on an auction, described as 'minty'.. as in Peppermint I ask myself...?:grumpy:.Not a bad knife, OK price but sure as night had followed day it had had a ride on the buffer, some pits left on the backsprings, dings on the bolster, even 'home engraving' on the handles....Then there's this insolent note with the invoice "Please always give us 5 stars our feedback score is important to us" Yeah....:thumbdn:

Oh.....! Duh, I thought you had already won it. I was surprised to see its twin up there!?!?! Don't worry, I bid low. And I am kind of intrigued by this knife. If I win it, maybe we can get a better idea about what the backstory is.

Blades often break that way when they're torqued like a screwdriver, or when the back is smacked with a hard object like a hammer to drive the blade through something. The break starts at the choil since it's the weakest area, kind of like a tear strip on a bag. It then progresses to the thicker area of the blade, where it meets too much resistance and then heads down to the less resistant thinner edge and viola! Broken blade. You guys should definitely not be reading any more into this, why would anyone intentionally screw up a blade that way? Putting your finger in a notch like that on a 2" blade that pivots is not too smart unless you want it chopped like a guilotine.

Eric, Thank you for the thoughtful reply --makes a lot of sense. Dan, No worries. I just want good things for you and the other members. Always use caution on the 'Bay.

Maybe the seller got it this way, so lightly used is how he described it and assumes that is how the knife was sold. Had to look up the word Choil, but may have be done for more control while peeling or carving/whittling.

This wouldn't surprise me. Aside from the radical 'mod' to the blade, it doesn't look like it was very heavily worn or sharpened. It may've been a 'lightly used', or even new, knife before the finger-choil was ground into the blade. Many folks here on the forum aren't shy about 'modding' brand new knives in ways like this, if they're convinced it'll enhance the usefulness for their own purposes.

Some sellers of items like this won't necessarily recognize a 'modded' knife, if they acquired it secondhand, and have no knowledge of the original design or pattern. I see a lot of knives sold on the auction site, from people who specialize in re-selling items acquired from estate sales. The sellers don't always recognize what they've got, and may have no real knowledge of knives at all, from a collectable standpoint. If the 'choil' on this knife was skillfully added to an otherwise new or lightly-used knife, a secondhand buyer may not even realize it's been modified (lots of examples of that, in BRL's sub-forum here).

I had to ask the seller:

Dear seller dood,

That is a bit more than "Slightly used".
- me

His response:

Dear me,

I'm not sure why you think that. The blade has never been sharpened, and its almost 50 years old

Dear seler dood,

I think that, because there is a huge chunk of blade missing. Look up any image for a Schrade 12OT, and you'll see the difference.

His final response:

Dear me,

The 120 has a full blade. The 120T has the half circle out. It was made for cutting stalks. I have 9 of the and the all look like that.

Just wow. Apparently, my google-fu is severely lacking, because I can't find any info on it.
