How did you become a knife junky?

Bought one of those crap $30 "survival" knives in the 80's in the military.. And when it broke I ended up with a ka-bar... Used it hard, and it never failed me...After becoming civilian never thought much of knives, but ive allways had a love of fine tools. Bought a spydie endura a few years ago, and that was the gateway knife... Now I own several spydies, benchmade's and now zero tolerance... Maybe I'll end up on the side of the road with a sign. "Will work for knives" if this keeps up

For me it started about 15 years ago when I inherited a few of my grandfather's case knives. Then, the progression went as follows:
Spyderco folders... Esee & Becker fixed blades... custom fixed blades.

Started collecting when I was 5 years old. It wasn't until I hit my mid-late teens and found knife channels on youtube that I really started taking it seriously. Now I have only the forums to blame!! Haha

I saw First Blood when I was 11. My uncle was a knife nut and would give me his old SMKW catalogs...I haven't been able to shake it since.

"Sheath knives" hahahaha! Yes! That's what we used to call em! I had a bunch of classic old folders that had been passed down by old relatives, but it took a couple of years of begging my mom every time we stopped at the Citgo station to get my first sheath knife! :-).

I really can't remember a time when I didn't have/carry a knife. I was a kid in the 60's and it was completely normal for most boys to have a pocket knife in their pocket along with all the other bits and pieces that can be found in any boy's pocket. Carry it to school? No problem. Just don't get caught carving your initials onto the bathroom doors. To me, a knife in my pocket has always been a natural part of a man's attire, kind of like a belt or a shoes.

I can't really say that I was catching the collecting bug, but I slowly seemed to have more pocket knives around the house for a couple of decades without me actually consciously 'Collecting' them. In fact at that point I probably didn't even realize that individual knives had names. I just thought of them as "My small or large Spyderco, my Buck, or my Kershaw". Then about four years ago I went to a local gun and knife show with a friend who was a pretty serious knife collector. We spent about eight hours going up and down the isles and him showing me all the differences between models and brands, explaining the differences in blade steels, etc. I'd have to say that was the moment that I consciously became a knife "Collector". I bought four knives at that show, and there probably hasn't been a month go by since where I haven't bought at least one blade.

I got a hobo knife when I was 7 or so, and used it for eating every day! A couple of years later I got my first SAK, one of the really neat ones with a saw and corkscrew on it. (why a corkscrew???) I carried it everywhere with me, including school back when a knife was not considered a dangerous killer devil weapon.
I got my first expensive knife when I was in college, a sebenza. It was all downhill from there!

I was a boy scout. Years later I came to this forum looking for opinions on the Buck Adrenaline Ti that I saw on clearance at Gander Mountain. The rest is history.

I have always had a fascination with knives as far back as I can remember.
Had mostly cheap ones from flea markets till I bought my first good knife
in 1996 I was 16 and I worked a summer job up in Iowa and bought myself
a spyderco catcherman. I still have it and will always cherish it.

you too - you remember!

i was the knife king with my kbar lock folder and buck sheath knife.

well, i have too tell the story:
northwoods boyscout camp in wis.

i made a fire, a 10 foot one - one match!

they came from 2 miles too put it out -- alternating fire building from small hole, and tripod, then a qaud, again and again until it was 6 feet wide or more by over 8 feet tall.

one match, they said the rangers, they could see it from 2 miles.

I don't consider myself a knife junky. I'm not addicted to them. I do have a healthy interest in knives. I find all types of blades to be fascinating. I find that my interest in differing blade designs, metals used and how they are treated for strength and hardness,as well as attempting to sharpen different grinds a wholesome distraction from the devils addictive offerings. He can be quite persuasive when given the opportunity. Like the blade of many knives, I'm best when I'm staying strait and narrow.

Back in scouts I could care less about knives. Then about 6 months after I earned Eagle and turned 18, I found youtube, which I previously thought was good only for music videos. I think I started with Cutlery Lover, then Nutnfancy, then it just exploded from there. When I got a job after that I couldn't stop buying knives, and only recently stopped to save for my move out of California

I blame it on getting a Becker BK2 three years ago and then I did nothing but buy fixed blades for a year and a half and now I am back to folder collecting again. Dang you Spyderco...

Bought my first knife as an adult as I was kitting up for police work 6 years ago. The police supply store decided to stop carrying Emersons, and the ones they still had were on sale. I had never heard of them. My friend bought one while I bought a Cold Steel TI Lite. It had a pseudo wave feature. I thought it was pretty cool. Then the clip fell off, and I felt gipped. I asked my friend about his Emerson (I didn't know the company by name). Then I went and bought my own, the CQC15. The second that thing hit my hand I thought it was the sexiest inanimate object I ever touched. That was it.

Well I had a couple traditionals as a kid, Saks, Case ect. I was given an old Spyderco from a good buddy 6-7 years ago. After that. I found this place and them BAM! You all know where that road leads.

In fith grade I read a book about hunting. This got me into guns. I was watching gun videos YouTube where I ran into knife videos. At the same time, I had a friend who was in Boy Scouts and had a sak. I thought it was the coolest thing ever so, my dad bought me one. I loved it so much I got another... Another...another......
