I'd been collecting factory tacticals and I'd come across the Australian Knifemaker's Guild. I called around and found that a local knifemaker Bruce Crawley lived close to where I worked. As it turned out, he wasn't in the best of health. I just had to meet him - when I did it felt like an honour and his workmanship was awesome. I ended up buying a knife from him which probably doesn't cost that much by "usual" custom knife standards but it was a lot of money for me at the time. Have never regretted it.
If we want to argue over the definition of custom meaning to my specifications, then no, I've never bought a "custom." I've always found a maker whose range and quality waas such, there was always something to suit my taste on their table...
