how did you get into knives in the first place?

when I was 9 years old my dad got me a cheapo slipjoint in a gas station store while buying a pack of smokes, he ahd no idea what he created, lol...from there I went into a knife craze!!!!!!! for a few years I bought as many cheapos as I could afford, and got knives every christams a birthday! after a few years I was looking up knives and found the forums and then my addiction really started! And here I am, lol...

Well, my Mom got me started on knives. We used to go camping a lot, and she got me into knives!! I got my first one when I was 7 years old. I have been hooked ever since. What has been fun is that I have been able to buy her some knives now.

My first recollections of knives were.......just there. I grew up and hunted with my father, but knives were never a big thing, yet I loved them since I can remember. I can remember daydreaming as a youngun' about knives and what the perfect knife would be. I devoured everything I could about knives......I was given a whole stack of Blade Magazines that had quite a few American Blade mags stuck in there also. I probably read everyone of them cover to cover at least two to three times. First knife I bought was from the hardware store downtown and it was a long single bladed folding Queen knife. I believe it was a fruit tester, but not sure. I can tell you this, even then, at the age of 12, I was eat up with the knife being perfect. It had a little play in the blade and I eventually discovered that you could tighten it up with a hammer and a punch, and so i did. Next knife was a Hawkbill, don't remember the brand, but I liked it......thought it was BAD-ASSED, and thought I was also.:o. From there it was to mostly fixed blades up through my teen years, and then women came along and I sold off my collection to get "women money" That lasted for a few years, but after getting married I got back into knives so I could have a hobby. Built up an even better collection, got divorced, sold off collection to pay for divorce things, got back on my feet, started a new collection and that is where I'm currently at!

Came on the "Forum" to find a replacement/treat for myself "EDC", ended up snooping around, and now, I might have to get a production model "and" a custom. I might have the disease!!!! I've "carried" for almost 40 yrs. I, too, was raised & taught that knives & guns are tools to be respected and valued, not "evil" weapons. The evil is done when these tools fall into the wrong (stupid, or irresponsible) hands.

yep a sock drawer started it all for me... when i was about 14 my dad gave me a camillus 26 2 bladed folder with a custom sheath, that came from my grandpa who had recently died. Carried it everywhere as a kid:eek: somehow managed to hold onto it...
fast forward 21 years and im going through my sock drawer which is where i keep a few of my keepsakes pulled out the old camillus figured i'd research it and the rest is history:D now i'm an old slippie fiend!
nice topic

Sometime during my tenth year of life I figured that I was a man by then:rolleyes: and I thought that every man ought to have a knife on him at all times. Its funny, because I never picked the idea up anywhere, it just kind of developed. I went down to the local sporting goods store with my parents to look at the knives. I picked out a cheap semi-serrated folder with a thumbstud and I carried that thing with me everywhere(except school). I used it for anything that needed cutting. Sometime while I was 12, I turned into a mall ninja, and bought any knife which looked bada%*. It was when I was 15 that the mall ninja inside me died, making room for the knifeknut who only likes quality blades, and thinks of knives as tools first and weapons last. It was in the final days of my 15th year that I discovered BFC, and so began the madness...:D

I grew up on a farm/ranch into a big family of hunters and fishermen. Continued with knives through the service the started collecting SAK's. From there it went from bad to badder.
