How did you learn to sharpen?

I sharpen freehand On a stone. Learned by watching YouTube videos. Although I must admit I had previous experience with sharpening wood chisels and gasket scrapers.

Agreed with jobasha11. There are lots of ways to skin a cat and most of them will get the job done. Get some basic instruction, watch someone who is good do it and try to handle a truly sharp knife so you know what it should feel like, and then practice practice practice. A lot of practice. Not a skill most people get good at overnight but it is super important to know how to maintaing your tools yourself. Anyone worth their salt should be able to at least put a serviceable edge on their knife. Also, once you get accustomed to having a sharp knife, using a dull knife is so frustrating.
