How did your knife obsession start?

my dad gave me my first knife when i was 4 =p haha... then gave me like 4 more knives when i was 7... thats what really sparked my interestes in knives..

since then i own various brands.. such as spyderco, kershaw, SOG, got a benchmade 710 comin in the mail should be here this week :)...

I've always had an interest in blades. As a young boy I would frequently carry a stick around pretending it was a sword, I suspect a lot of people here did as well.

Hahaha, Guilty :D

Used to make all kinds of wooden swords and junk when I was little

since I was old enough to walk. my dad collects knives and gave me a little gerber lockback once i was old enough to handle it. essentially grew from there, always used decent quality bucks and a few crkt's then recently bought my first really nice knife, an rc-4.

I guess watching my dad sharpen his case knife, getting ready to skin some coons for their hides to sell.

Ditto!. Substitute 'Uncle' for Dad, and add Rabbits, Quail, Dove, Whitetail Deer and Rainbow Trout among others to Coons and I reckon you and I are cut from the same swath of denim I'll wager!   ..

.. Anyways, we're talking middle-late 1960's in camp after a good hunt, and I was 7-8 years old and begged my Uncle to teach me how to field dress a big ole Cottontail Rabbit he was preparing for the spit.. And He says, "Son, go and git yo knife and I'll sho ya".. And, I says,(which he already knew) "But, Uncle Lew my pa won't let me have my own knife".. He laughed real hard and had a swig of local white whiskey and muttered, "Here boy, take mine and we'll chat wit'chor paw tomorrow". Soon after that and from then on I had my own knife in my pocket every day without fail.. Mostly Case, Queen and Schrade slip-joints and sheath knives.. 43+ years later nothing has changed.. :D

Here is my Uncles old Case XX which he passed to me when he got a new one in Stag when I was just 10 back in 1970..

At five years old Mom bought me a small flea market folder bout 1 1/2 in blade a little white scales, tourist knife said California on it, cut my left thumb, I remember the knife remember the cut, boy scouts also

I was interested with anything sharp from being very young at age. I remember cutting myself on a pice of glass, and instead of crying and complaining....I was more interested with the fact something could do that. Since then I like all sharp objects. I guess when I was 6, I asked santa claus for a chainsaw, A REALLY SHARP ONE! I could not believe my mom when she told me that when I got older. Through my teens I always liked cutting things. My first knife I can remember was a sak(lost it), then a slip joint(lost it) and then a small schrade folder I still have. When I got older I got a kershaw whirlwind for x-mas. Then I bought a few benchmades, a spydie a few years later and now have worked up to CRK just recently. When I get out of college and have funds, I know I'll be buying customs till the day I expire!

My dad always had pocket-knives and he used them often for whatever he was working on so I just naturally thought of them as a must have tool. I think I started with a flea market Buck 110 knock off whose lock eventually failed and my dad took it away from me and got me a real Buck. I also got into Wolverine when I was really young when I saw him in Daredevil 196 and thought he was the coolest character ever and then I started collecting X-men. So, if you know anything about Daredevil and Wolverine you'll know that they fight ninjas every once in awhile so I got into chinese throwing stars and automatic (snikt) knives. As I got older and needed more useful and tougher knives I gravitated towards Spyderco and Kershaw but I still had no idea until a few months ago that there was such a community as this and I have learned a ton and love learning more every time I visit here.

Mine started with an opinel when I was around 7-8. It was given to me by our neighbour. I'd always liked knives since then. used to buy crappy victorinox knockoffs (all you can afford at age 11). Didn't do anything about them for years though untill I saw someone's Mcusta.....

Started finding some info on them....I still want one. One day I will own the Mcusta I want.

Growing up in California's central valley and living in a blue collar community it was pretty much expected that men would have a knife on them. Ever since I can remember I've had an "obsession" (I like to call it a fascination) with weapons. (not that I see knives as weapons generally) As a very small child I used to build guns out of Legos. I'd never actually pretend to shoot people with them, just show them off and carry them around with me. When I was 6 or 7 I remember asking my dad when I'd get to carry my own pocket knife. He said I'd have to wait until I was 8, just like my older sister did. And on my 8th birthday my dad slipped a case lock back that had belonged to my grand father into my pocket. Boy was I surprised when I found it later that day. :) I carried either that knife or an old victorinox two bladed knife that my dad had carried for years and years. Anyway, when I finally got a job at the age of 15 I decided to buy myself what we would call a tactical knife. I ended up buying several of course. I bought a couple of chinese assisted opening knives from a surplus store, a Kershaw vapor, a CRKT KISS tanto and a Gerber AR. After a couple of years I decided to buy a "nice" knife. I ended up with a CRKT Cruiser. I thought it was a bees knees at the time. I've pretty much destroyed that knife since then. Broke the tip off trying to pry open a metal box, broke the clip off several times (its super glued on now) The knife has horrible blade play, the blade is actually bent from using it to open paint cans and the edge is chipped pretty bad. I decided to buy a new better knife since the CRKT was so badly beaten. And since I love to research I ended up on blade forums. Now I work in the fishing industry and everybody uses those cheap serrated victorinox deck (paring) knives. That's if they have a knife handy at all. It saddens me :(

edit: wow, I should really learn how paragraphs work.

As a young boy I would frequently carry a stick around pretending it was a sword, I suspect a lot of people here did as well.

Count me in. I also used to make bows and arrows off the hazel tree in my garden, which I couldn't of done with out my good old SAK.

I became addicted to a game called mumbley peg as a boy scout. I went off testing knives to see which had the best balance and ergonomics for mumbley peg. That was a long time ago. I haven't played it for a long, long time.

Mine of course started when I was watching old Tarzan flicks, and I thought it was so cool that Johnny Weismuller had a big knife to slay all the animals, etc. Soon I started putting a plastic toy knife in my swim trunks when we went to the local pool. My dad gave me my first pocket knife with wood handlesThen it took off with WWII movies, and I got a Kabar as my first real fixed blade which I still have (the first fixed blade I had was a hollow handle survival knife with 420 blade, so it was my knock stage). Now I am really enjoying the frontier style knives from America's history. And I occasionally still wonder what I would look like carrying my Tarzan knife up in a tree as a boy, except now I cannot get into the tree 30 years later.

We were just kids when we started carrying pocket knives...
Plus I had my Cub Scout knife which was neat-o...

But it wasn't until I joined the service that I really got into it...
82nd Airborne from '75-'79...we all carried two or three knives when in the field...
Handling 'em, sharping 'em, throwing 'em and even cuttin' stuff....:D

Never lost the joy of a fine knife after that....

I have also enjoyed talking about knives with my wife's grandfather, hh also had knives he had collected over the years and he enjoyed just looking at whatever I just bought!

In another thread a member wrote something about a knife being primally sensual to us -I have to completely agree. As soon as I could comprehend what a knife was -I was obsessed.

I remember my Dad showing me his collection when I was very young. He probably had about 40 knives that he kept nice and oiled in a box -as well as being razor sharp. He had puukkos, slip joints, SAKs, kabars, Case knives, and some other random ones.

Then there was also the machete rack:). He had an old Collins Machete among many others of differing shapes and sizes.

It was truly love at first sight.:D

When I was around 15 or so. My friend returned from his holiday trip to Turkey(? , not sure) and he brought me a cool shuriken as a souvenier that he had bought at a market place, got himself one too. He got them mainly as decoration, thinking they'd be cool. But I on the other hand thought, I wonder if these will work? Then on the way home looked around to make sure no one was around, went ahead and threw it onto a wooden fence, and after a couple tries it stuck. I was in awe, it was the msot awesome thing ever!

I told him the next day that they are actually usable, and that summer was pretty much spent throwing shurikens in the backyard. :) Man that fence is a total mess now after a couple summers, all splintery and falling apart.

So I got interested in throwing "weapons" and looked into getting some more, eventually I found out shurikens (stars) were illegal where I live. (Oops! :D) And had to give up on getting more. Then one day in computer class I stumbled upon a local online retailer and found out that they were selling throwing cards and apparently they were legal... (Funny huh?) Needless to say I got myself a set. :D One of the cards snapped so I sent them in and got a new one and they are still going strong.

After a couple years and couple bad "throwing knife" purchases, one fall I thought that I need something sharp to keep me busy for the winter or else I'll go crazy. That's right, I got myself a balisong, a cheap CCC along with and MTech Stinger (Ti-Lite rip-off), I thought it was cool. 2 weeks later the CCC broke a latch after dropping it many times when flipping so I sent it back with some extra money to get a better quality one, which in the end lasted a lot longer, its still intact, but with a loose tang pin.

Then what really sparked my interest in higher end knives was the Cold Steel Solid proof DVD I got along with the cheapo knives, I watched it over and over again in awe, I still find the demos very entertaining, but nowadays I know not to listen to the stuff spewing out of Lynns mouth. :) From there I moved into YouTube to people such as cutlerylover and nutnfancy. I sunk deeper into the world of knifenuts and before I knew it, I was in a point of no return.

Needless to say, I have NO REGRETS WHATSOEVER. :D

My grandfather gave me a small pocket knife when I was about 8 years old - the bug was implanted within me. A couple of years later, I was at an army navy surplus store with some friends and spied a william henry folder; I have been smitten ever since

Mine started after my dad a big case collector introduced me to case knives when i was young. Now i am obsessed with all kinds of knives.
