If the blade is a high carbon steel, just use gun bluing. Birchwood Casey gun blue is sold at most sportng goods stores and WalMart's everywhere for about $5.00. Just degrease the blade really good, wipe the blue on and presto.
If your blade is stainless steel, paint is probably the cheapest way to go.
Stainless won't take a gun blue. I'd recommend looking into the new Boron Carbide coatings I'm seeing in all the mags. You can get one or two blades done, but I'm not sure on pricing (Seems it was around $35.00 on a single blade). This company that does it has a couple page advertisment in the latest Blade mag, and they do all the coating for Kershaw, among other large scale and small scale operations. I'm sure someone else will chime in with more info and options for you.
