How do I get one?

Hi, I'm reletively new to the world of knives beyond the kitchen, my interest started after a few camping trips this summer and the realisation that my 7 year old small folder was not going to cut it.....

I started browsing this forum about 4 weeks ago and so far have picked up a Fallkniven A1, Becker BK-2 and a Spyderco Para-2. This covers my camping / treking / bush chores and EDC folder......

In the flow of reading up on many aspects of knife sharpening, brands etc the images of the Hinderer have started messing with me, the desire to own one has grown.

At first I thought the miss matched scales looked weird - metal on one side and coloured composite scale on the other. The blade didnt look much to me either, then the price came as a shock, a grand plus!

It's a great looking folder but it doesnt look like a thousand bucks worth of folder.

I'm an engineer by trade and appreciate high quality F&F, attention to detail etc and thats what has me slowly hooked on owning one of these, appart from the indecision of getting either the 3.5" XM18 or the 4" XM24 I last night researched for venders of the knife, pricing/shipping etc and availability.

Well, another minor suprise that these are nigh-on-impossible to get, how on earth do I get one? How do I avoid paying the ridiculous second hand / third party prices?

I need your help -

First with the decision over the XM18 3.5 and the XM24 4 - If I could hold these in my hand, get a feel for them etc this would be an easy decision. Could you guys post photos of these knives side by side and both held in a normal grip to help me gauge the size.

Second - any advise on how to get one of these knives and at a reasonable price.

I really appreciate your help.

Jay.

I'm in the same boat as yourself: lusting after a Hinderer XM18 3.5. They seem to pop up every now and again on the boards, but always at close to 200+% mark-up, which is not only a lot but also makes me very leery--buying a knife that expensive second-hand.

Unfortunately, for now anyway, that seems to be the only choice for those of us who would like to have one but are not credentialed.

The only other alternative I have seen is going to a knife show where Hinderer knives will be and getting a winning raffle ticket that permit the winners to purchase a knife.

So good luck and be patient. That's what I am doing.

Just to clarify, there is NO cost for the raffle ticket at the shows. 1 per person. The only cost is if you are picked and then you pay for the knife you choose. Again, the lottery ticket itself is free.

Thanks for the clarification, Steve. I did not know that. I apologize for any confusion I may have caused.

For real? you have to win a raffle in order to then pony up on a Hinderer?? unreal.

Odd business model, why on earth is it so difficult to buy one from the manufacturer, it's almost like they dont need the business thus making it so difficult for me to hand over my cash for a pocket knife.

The reality is i'll either wait or take my business elsewhere. Shame.

I still really want one so please help with advice on connecting my hand to Hinderer and pics of the 3.5" & 4" XM's

That's not the case though. They are a small operation and couldn't begin to keep up with all the demand out there and still maintain a quality level as great as theirs. Personally I respect the fact that the Hinderer crew is more concerned with putting out a top notch piece of cutlery vs just rolling in dough. Also another respectable quilty
About Hinderer is the fact that he acknowledges the high demand for the knives and gear alike and to quail the probably overwhelming response to the products they collaborate with other knife companies that can handle they bigger volume output. Even as such thos companies found it a tall order and begin to see his design are some of the most sought after as well as his extreme attention to details so subtle we often miss them they're so well thought out.

I'm sure they could up production tenfold, but some times in doing so you inadvertently sacrifice QC and I respect the safeguarding of that QC. Thus to control or alleviate the demand you raise the price slightly and limit the avenues in which the product is offered. All in all, I'm saying it's analogous to a great business practices.

JMO. And I don't mean to have a stern undertone either. Just my pov.

Keep an eye on the "for sale" section. I got lucky and scored one at a local forum recently, and at a decent price to boot.
I agree though, it seem`s like it is normally pretty hard to find one at a decent price, which is a shame............but not the maker`s fault.

Well... There are a few pathetic individuals who fly to every lottery available and cheat to sell the knives at 3x their retail value. They have no interest what so ever with the knives and what goes into each one of them, or the activities associated with GTG's, etc. Rick puts a lot of effort into these events and these people (person) shit all over it. It's disgusting. If you would like to know who to not buy from, shoot me a PM or e-mail.

Hinderer Knives has no control over prices of knives on the secondary market. They are a three man operation and production numbers have gone up every year since the introduction of the XM-18 and XM-24. They will sell direct to active military personnel, police, fire, emt and other first responders but do not take orders from the general public. The Hinderer Knives website has a list of dealers that receive knives from the shop. At the shows, the knives would be purchased in the first 2 minutes if not for the lottery procedure. The secondary market prices (which we don't like to talk about since we have no control) are a matter of demand exceeding supply.
While I may not have answered all your questions I hope this info helps.
Thanks.
Mike

And by the way I noticed no one has said it yet but...
Welcome to the wonderful world of Knives! :)

That's a shame. Yes, I would like to know who the disreputable people are and not have any dealings with them.

I also completely understand the Hinderer model and have no issues with it. They are a small operation and make high-quality knives on their own terms and I think that's great. Why fix something that's not broke?

I will get one someday, just have to be patient. Also several of the dealer sites that the Hinderer site links to will allow you to sign up and get an email when a new Hinderer comes in. It is probably gone within minutes, but that is yet another potential avenue you could take towards acquiring one.

Good luck!

I agree, there is one person in particular (LK) that did this to the Busse community and is doing it now to the Hinderer community.
Not only does he bring himself to the shows and receives the lottery tickets, but brings his brothers, girlfriend, and friends to get lottery tickets also.
He has been banned from BF and set up shop in another well know forum.
He is in it for one reason only...greed.
I will just hope the Hinderer folks cut him off at the knees before their great reputation gets hurt by this dishonorable individual also.
My 2 cents

Folks lets be careful here, an old saying comes to mind " No good deed goes unpunished".
Rick Hinderer and his team have no responsibility to anyone or anyones way of doing business other than themselves and Mrs. Rick.
They've been doing fine without our input and will do fine moving forward.
They happen to build the best knife in the world IMO and thanks to them for that.
What happens on the secondary market or at shows or wherever is an unfortunate and totally irrelevant issue to this forum or the actions of these fine
knifemakers.
Lets US as a community keep the discussion and occassional discord of discourse above the fray and be mindful of why we are here and who we are.
Not done, I am probably old enough to be most on this forums Dad - been in the Military AND Business for over 30 years. Swam with scum and Served with the Best Men that ever lived.
I would put Rick and his crew AND the way they are doing what they are doing up against the best planned and best executed attack plan, business plan, operating model I have ever seen because....... they care.
About the ART, the People, the Customer, the Crew the list is too long.
But , the availability inconveniences some of us frustrates others and interferes with many many's plans and plots to profit from the product and passion of another.
This is B.S. Enough.
It is what it is. Buy em' , love em' use em' and leave well enough alone more and say Thanks a lot more.

K. ?

+1!

The best chance of getting one is in the lotto's for sure unless you have the money and don't mind spending it (through a dealer). In that case, just find a reputable dealer online and put your e-mail down for an "in-stock" notification...and then hope your near a computer or already on it when you get that e-mail! :D

So if I have a brother-in-law that is a volunteer fire fighter in our little town, can he get me a Hinderer direct from Rick?

Would be easy to say, "I give up" right now but nothing could be farther from the truth. Wow.

IMO that is abusing the system. Rick offers the discounts and option to order direct for those who serve. You do not serve.
