How do I heat a shop building in Ontario Canada

If you don't like the in floor heating, which is the direction much of the heating industry is going as efficiency standards move up, you could use old cast iron radiators and heat it with an external water heater as well. I don't know how common they are where you are at (they don't exist in california :) ), but they might be a cheaper option than radiant floor materials in new construction if you needed another option.

There are a lot of people around here going with mini split heat pumps. They're supposed to be very efficient.

Heat Pumps are efficient. But costs don't always reflect that where fueled heat is cheaper than electricity. Mini systems are ugly little things designed for specific problems, not a patch all plug in solution. Just my opinion of them.
