How do I maintain the edge on my BK9?

Spyderco Sharpmaker for me too and for field use I always carry a DMT diafold (fine/extra fine).

I keep with me the Accusharp knife sharpener ...
NO WAY a carbide pull-through sharpener is getting near my blades unless in an emergency!

Such sharpeners 'tear' metal away and probably do as much harm as good.

BTW, posting links to vendor websites not on the supporting vendor list is against the rules.

Ive been trying for two days to make it sharp with a wet stone and I still cant get it paper cutting sharp.

play with different angles. i usually start flatter than i feel is necessary. make (i dunno) like 10-20 passes on each side and see what it looks like. if it's not getting sharper, increase the angle a touch and try again. sometimes i've found the angle that cuts a new edge is way more acute than i would have guessed.

this is the same advice as the "sharpie" trick (just spoken differently). in other words, color the blade edge with a sharpie and hit your sharpener. check to see where you are taking the marker off. adjust accordingly.

believe me, i know it can be frustrating, but keep at it. it will also be quite rewarding....

I found his explanation to be great. You really need to get a burr up on one side before switching to the other. That's the key to the shaving edges.

On the carbon steel Beckers, I use a India Oil Stone with fine and coarse sides (1"x 2"x 8") which is pretty inexpensive. It gets my Beckers sharp enough for me and rather quickly on the fine side. I use DMT diamond stones on the D2 Beckers which I only have the BK-24.
