This happen when my friend was playing with my knife and he used his butane torch. He heated up the metal and it left a rainbow color stain on both side. I tried cleaning the blade with water and no dice. Any suggestions?

aww dang, so theres no way in removing it?

Well, you can get the stain off using some sort of metal polish, but in my opinion, your friend owes you a new knife. Those colors indicate that the metal has been heated to the point that it may not be hard enough to hold an edge any longer. I would insist that he replace it.

Why did you let him do this? The horror!

yeah... a big fail. I used some metal polish, which looks a little bit better. I guess I can get use to the titanium burnt finish. But does anyone how much a replacement blade goes for?

That's a Benchmade, so as I recall it's pretty cheap. Call 'em and ask! :)

I'd be tempted to clean it off, sharpen it up, and see how it works. The heat treat has been DAMAGED for sure, the colour is enough indication for that, but it might still retain enough hardness to be useful enough. Just do the harder work with the section nearer the serrations, where the heat did not penetrate.

And yeah, that guy owes you a new knife.

Benchmades DO bladeswaps and i believe they are $25 for a satin finish and $35 for a Black Coated blade. I however do not know if they do this for discontinued models. You could try emailing or calling. They email back within a few days at most!

I agree with kbrasmodler. I think your friend should either replace the or foot the cost of replacing the blade. I've seen tables that list the approximate temperature associated with the transition colors. My guess is that the temper of the blade is ruined.

I assume you weren't there at the time...well he was either trying to color it or one other thing I can think of...either way I would have lost it if my friend did that to my knife. Hope you can get a replacement.

Get a new friend.

What on earth was your friend thinking? It looks like he just bought you a knife for sure. Tell him you will sell him the one he ruined for the cost of a new one then snap the tip off before you give it to him so it does not fail and hurt him later...because friends don't let friends use knives that are ruined. He can always grind it to a new and shortened point.

Still dying to know what he was trying to accomplish. As for the blade I agree with the sharpen and use and see how it holds up. Might just be fine, or could be ruined at least you'll find out before going and getting a replacement blade if possible. BTW punch your buddy in the nuts for being stupid.

Duly noted on the nut punching lol, but yeah you get those buddies ones in a while that likes to play aroun with stuff. I don't used the blade for any extreme purposes other than open boxes, and cut paper.

Now its probably going to suck for the box part. Just sayin, and make sure you hit him in the nuts REALLY hard. If my friend did that to my knife paying for it would be the least of hos worries.

If the blade is stainless, ad I'm sure it is, it's possible the heat treat was not damaged. Sharpen it and try it.
And, don't let your friend experiment with your stuff!

Tee up your buddy, square your stance to the target step back two large paces and one to the left. Now yell "Hike!" and deliver a soccer style PAT kick to the danglies. Once the vomiting eases up, kindly explain the effect of excessive heat on heat tempered blades and negotiate the terms of blade or whole knife replacement. :)
