I recently got a 1946 US issue artic sleeping bag in near mint condition. One prob it really needs to be washed. But the tag says not to dry clean. Its a down bag, so what do I do?

Gunner...

You can go to Any outfitting store, and buy a wash especially for down bags.
It can be washed in your washing machine at home on the gentle cycle,, or if you prefer in your bath tub.

This "soap" will bring the loft back into the bag, and put the natural oils back into the feathers.

I would perhaps wait until warmer weather with this though and hang it outside to dry.

If you want a confirmation on this,,post this in the Wilderness forum to get a better responce sinse this is actually OT..

You know, if it was made in 1946 and the tag says it shouldn't be dry-cleaned ... that means it shouldn't be dry-cleaned by the methods they used in 1946. I bet it would be no problem at all for modern methods. Ask at your local dry-cleaner; they'll know.

Ask on the old.down.sleepingbags.rec newsgroup.

Wash by hand, dry low heat with a sneaker in the dryer.

Never Ever Dry Clean a Down bag...
That will strip the natural oils from the down.....

That would have been good advice ... in 1946. Most dry cleaners are set up to dry clean down bags now. Cf. Colin Fletcher's Complete Walker or anything else published on camping within the last decade or two....
