How do they sharpen new knives from the factory?

Difficult to get specifics. I know that Spyderco considers their process proprietary information, so we'll never know for sure.

There is a video of a Spyderco factory visit at Golden that shows a quick flash of sharpening. They show the blades being cut-out and at one point I believe it shows a Native being finished on a belt. Can't find anything on youtube but I'll update if I do.

2"x72" belt grinder, edge up. I start with 220 grit norton SG to nail the bevels, then a trixact a20 to take out the scratches.
Buff edge down on a 8"-10" rock hard wool felt wheel charged with matchless black and spinning at 3600 rpm.
Oh yeah, it took a little practice.
Sparks are OK but don't burn it.

i'm pretty sure mike told me that case buys paper wheels from him to sharpen their knives. i sharpened 241 folders and i dont think i could have done them any other way as fast as i did so i think they would work good for production sharpening. i just talked to mike on the phone. he said case did buy the paper wheel system 5 years ago but wont use them. he told me microtech uses the paper buffing wheel to finish the edges on their knives.
