well i havent posted in a while and have been in the woods most of the time. :D thought i'd throw this one up on the forums because its a question of curiosity to me.

how do u carry your fixed blade? by this i mean. do u carry it on your left side or your right? and which "handed" are you? why do u carry it on that side? does it offer advantages?

to this date i used to carry my fixed blades always on my right side. i have no idea why i just carried it on my right. i guess out of habit. recently i went out with my kershaw D2 outcast and figured "heck since all my buddies have it on the left i might as well give it a shot" :p

here are the few differences i noticed:

1) it is somewhat easier to draw then pulling it from my right side... i guess this is because im right handed and reaching over to my left and drawing on an angle is easier than drawing the blade straight up when its on my right.

2) it helped make for a more efficient carrying load. i carry all my knives usually on my right side. but i divided the load to: big knife i use less on left and smaller easier to draw knives that i use more on my right. and i noticed its easier and quicker to access them.

so... which side do you guys carry your big fixed blades on? a few pics would be nice

cheers ^^

I like mine often in the small of my back horizontal, kydex rigs are great for this. Other wise like my HOGFSH or some others go drop leg or low ride.

dang thats one beauty of a knife ya got there MB.

making me drool as we speak :D

i've never tried the horizontal or drop leg carry before. are there any advantages to them as apposed to the traditional carry style?

damn rat those are nice...and its the first time i've ever heard of the "dangler" carry. and i guess moving with the leg would offer advantage when moving quickly through the bush? as in un-inhibitted movement.

some kool stuf im learning lots btw that pair looks like a couple of beauties.

cheers

Thanks, I got them from Dwayne at http://armoralleather.com/

the main advantage that I can see is when sitting, kneeling or crouching the knife doesnt get in the way. It also drops the handle down making for a comfortable draw. Basically a drop-leg sheath with a hinge.

If a knife is uncomfortable to carry, consider strapping it to the side fo your pack.

I carry my knife clamped between my front teeth at all times in wilderness environments! :D <<<<< kinda like that! :p

I actually carry my fixed blade (usually a Greco Explorer 9.5" blade) on my right side, with my Griptilian in my right pocket. My Leatherman Supertool 200 sits on my left side. When I find a belt pouch, I'll add my Smith's dual-sided diamond sharpener to the left, helping balance out the weight on the belt.

dont u notice its a bit harder to draw from the right side trout? i mean like pulling ur fixed blade out?

I carry my 12" kukri (kydex sheath) tucked into my belt traditional (crossdraw) style and my BK2 on my right hip in a kydex sheath from Eric.

I like a dangler. I tie it down on my leg. I wear it on my right side as I am left-handed and I usually wear a gun on the left side.

My large fixed blade is just over 6 inches in blade length. It is on the left side and rides high on my wide thick leather belt. Both belt and sheath are from 10 -12 oz. leather thick and stiff enough so that it doesn't flop around.

An advantage of a high riding sheath for bigger blades is that it doesn't get caught up on things nor does it get in the way of the seat belt when sitting in the truck. Riding high shows less sheath below my jacket making it concealable in moments when I don't want to draw attention in sheeple places.

I usually do whatever is comfortable, I'm right-handed and usually carry my knives on my right unless I am carrying a gun, my khuk, or my Laredo. The khuk is just more comfortable with a crossdraw and the Laredo's sheath is meant for crossdraw.

Small fixed blades and folders go on my right side.
Larger fixed blades often go to the small-of-the-back depending on sheath type, but I don't have any horizontal sheaths. The Native American plains style sheaths that some Barkies come with (and my CS Bushman) make for a nice s-o-b carry, since they ride on an angle naturally.
These sheaths are also nice for off-side carry (I'm a righty, so my off-side is on the left), again due to the angle.
Danglers can go to either side, for me, and if they have places for tie-downs, they definitely go on the right and get strapped down to the leg (low carry). If there are no tie-downs, as on my puukkos, I'll opt for cross-draw.
I find that a strong side dangler with tie-down is the most comfortable way for me to carry a large fixed blade.

I carry a razor or better sharp knife on a straight pull. I might carry a vexed or just sharp bowie or similar size on a cross pull.

If it's got about a 7" blade or less, I'll carry it on my right side. If I'm wearing a pistol on that side, I'll move the knife further back behind my hip. But if I'm carrying a big knife, I prefer crossdraw. I tuck it through my belt. I like this method a lot since it keeps the handle within easy reach, and the tip of the scabbard doesn't hang down nearly as far this way. The belt also keeps it pretty much in place, so I can tuck it back out of the way or whatever if needed.

well after alot of thinking (and checking finances)... i gave in and bought a coldsteel military classic R1... i absolutely fell in love with it when i saw it and well i didnt quite have money for a randal. havent had a chance to try that puppy out but it rides nice on the right side on the belt. easy to draw and is nice for 7inchs of blade steel =)

thanks for ur input on the carry guys. i should look into strapping my khuks onto my pack somehow when i hike. any suggestions?
