I don't have the ability to check quality of particles on the micron scale but what I can confirm is that when I do a progression say for example 14, 10, 5, 3.5, 1.0, 0.5, 0.25 microns and look at the blade under a scope or 50x mag the straches on the edge disappear progressively. It probably depends on the company that makes it, and generally price is a good indication here. You can come off a 1000 grit stone and follow the mention progession of pastes and get a really nice mirror edge. Again SEPARATE balsa strops are the key ingredients!
