how do you carry just a little bit of duct tape?

Maybe you could use a sheet of waxed paper or some thin plastic sheet just like the Pocket Duct product. I have also had problems with the heat. Always try to obtain the quality stuff.

Try going to a sign shop that does vinyl lettering for banners and ask for the scrap backing for the vinyl. The stuff comes in large sheets.

I wrap duct tape around drinking straws - similar to pencils, but lighter and easier to cut.

How do you know good quality from bad?

I put 2 strips around my nalgene bottles trapping a piece of para cord for a biner. I put strips wrapped around hiking staffs, sheaths, tent poles, pack frames. all pieces of equipment can very well carry tape wrapped around it for uses. I also keep a lot of tape wrapped around the thwarts of my canoe, I found that a whole roll can easily dissapear alone on the canoe, and another by just going through the gear you carry. Just be creative and use colors on some items. For instance my knife sheath and walking stick I use bright colors so I can find them easy. On the canoe I use Camo because the canoe is also used for duck hunting and I can use it for repairs easily on shirts and jackets without having to worry about sewing it up right away.

I build up a pad of big squares of duct tape on the back of whatever altoids or bigger kit I have with me. Also a good wrapping of vinyl elect. tape on kit as well. If I have backpack I carry a roll of each. Once used both tape types to repair cheap cracked fibreglass rod for my one man bivy tent. Held up for the weekend anyway.
