How do you carry your Big Busse's (in California)

The study actually considered everything but knife laws, beautiful women, burritos and geographic features. I'm sure if their was a study on that California would be number 1!

Yeah, that's why I settled on a FSH. At around 14" overall length, that's about the limit of being able to conceal within or on the side of a Day Pack. Now the real question is if I can even venture outside with my FSH in LA County? I suppose out of sight is out of mind. I don't call attention to myself with law enforcement, common sense being the rule. I suppose I could just get a 7" Becker and try and see how feasible it is to use outside hiking locally. I'd rather not have a $400+ knife get confiscated.

For local hiking, I'd primarily use my BM805 TSEK. It's a 4" folder and is plenty useful for most tasks, it's just the heavy chopping where it lacks (it's a helluva slicer).

Naw, you gotta bring out your FSH. It's too hard to leave it sitting in a sheath while you go out hiking. Like I said, I bring mine out all the time. I just throw it in a backpack with some water bottles and a hand towel. I only bring it out when the trail is clear, and I only hack at dead or dying vegetation (I think they'd have more of a problem with this, i.e. hacking into live vegetation, than with the knife to be perfectly honest). But again, if they confiscated it, that would suck.

Overall though, most cops are pretty cool. And i can;t imagine not being able to reason with one (unless of course you were doing something stupid, like trying to chop down a palm tree).

haha :D

Well, there are many excellent places to live in this great country; we can all agree on that

silverbullets, that is some fine looking steel you have there and the leather for your Rat is enviable, indeed. Nice.

From what I know, in LA county if you carry a fixed blade, it has to be in a sheath AND exposed. It is ok to wear it on your belt. As some people already mentioned, you're not going to get hassled about it when you're hiking/camping. However if you decide to be mister mall ninja and walk around downtown LA with it, there's a chance you might get hassled.

Oh and FYI for all those who whine about California not being "free".... is there really true freedom? I would love to drive 100mph on the freeway and run around naked, but there are LAWS that people need to abide by. Some are for safety reasons, some are just purely ridiculous, but regardless there are laws. Try living in a country where you can't even legally own guns or legally carry any knives on your person when you're out in public. You'll be a lot more grateful for what we have.

FWIW, I live near the beach in the South Bay. There are a lot of trails, especially around Palos Verdes, and further north past Malibu I like to frequent. There is a lot of loose brush growth, kind of amazing there aren't more fires, but probably not much of an issue with all the sea air and higher humidity levels than the inland desert areas.

So, I'm just concerned about the fact that I'll be hiking smaller trails that are somewhat isolated, then walking back to the car, which would usually be in a residential area, which I'm sure the sheeples would freak out seeing a 7+ inch knife strapped to my thigh or day pack.

That's why I'm considering a hybrid concealed sheath. Low key, color matching my day pack, with a cover of some kind that covers up the pommel and handle entirely. I can then easily open it up and uncover it when on the trail when needed, otherwise keep it hidden and covered. When outside of LA County, I'd just have the cover left open, snapped/velcroed in place or something, so it's more traditional open carry for compliance with State Laws.

Good news I hunted down the law for ya.

13.62.030 Exemptions to chapter applicability.
The foregoing restrictions shall not be deemed to prohibit the carrying of ordinary tools or equipment for use in a lawful occupation or for the purpose of lawful recreation, or where the carrying of a knife or dagger is a recognized religious practice. (Ord. 11915 § 3, 1979.)

13.62.040 Violation--Penalty.
Any person violating this chapter is guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of not exceeding $500.00 or by imprisonment in the County Jail for a period not exceeding six months, or by both such fine and imprisonment. (Ord. 11915 § 4, 1979.)

Sounds like you are free to carry it openly.

Dude, if you were wearing hiking gear with a pack, look like a normal guy, I don't think people would freak out at the fact that you have a 7" sheathed knife strapped to your belt. As I said, it's legal to carry, just don't go to the mall with it and you will be fine. But if you're paranoid about it, have it strapped to your pack... definitely looks more discreet.

the logical one,,,,good points you make,thank you.
i sometimes get upset at the direction our country is going,so its good to get a little perspective.

Yeah, this is pretty sound advice.

Except for the mall part. I love to play mall ninja or airport guy or crazy fan at the dodger game.

Heheh, I used to live near Rochester in North Chili. ;)
I wish I knew - I live about 45 minutes from Rochester/Chili. I used to live (13 {or more} years ago; my college years) in Brighton – which is right around the corner so to speak. But… I had not even heard of Busse Combat back then.

No offense to anyone who lives in NYC, but that city screws up soooooo much for the rest of NY...

The problem with carrying in Southern Cal. is that ten different police, county deputies, park rangers will each give you a different answer to what is legal - they don't know! And all it takes is one to ruin your weekend, month, year?

Google Cal. Knife laws - I read where we can carry fixed blade only open no concealed at all but individual cities can and do restrict the length.
If I was hiking around PV I'd carry a cheap 12" machete and see what happens.

Yosemite is federal land and i believe you can carry a large knife/camping tool in any park in Cali

I have been reviewing municipal codes for a lot of different cities, most only repeat the counties code, if they have anything about knives at all. I have only seen one so far that says anything about length and it is specifically talking about what can be concealed. In Malibu there are no additional restrictions on knives.

C'mon guys, let's not go there with firearms, back to carrying huge pieces of INFI steel, please. ;)

You only say that becouse guns and l a are a big no no aswell with ca in general lol
I work here 6 days a week I hate it with all my heart that's why I live in perris way east
The only 2 knives I carry in la are a benchmade 710 and a horton blood edc I made a kydex sheath for it to fit in my side pocket by the hammer loop I only buy pant with this pocket for that reason

My coworker and I were working late and a cop came up behind us and took his knife away it was a kershaw but the assisted open was broke he started flipping it with his wrist and was able to get the blade open and he tryed to say it was a switch blade
This stupid cop was lost just another reason I hate cops then I told him he had no idea what he was talking about but I shut up quick becouse I was at work and picking a fight with a cop would have got me fired

And a nother guy I worked with on my crew got a kline wire skining knife taken buy the cops when he got pulled over for speeding

I tell the story so you know the law does not matter unless you can prove it or you might lose that expencive knife
Freedom is going fast here try to enjoy what is left

Sounds sensible. I'll likely never need a larger knife like the FSH for local hikes, but I'll definitely be carrying it when hiking up in the mountains, and desert. So, it's OK to have it strapped to a pack for open carry requirements, doesn't have to be at waist level/ on the waist?

It just has to be:

A) In the sheath
B) Have it be exposed (not fully concealed)

So lets just say you have it in a sheath, and you stick it in your pack and part of the sheath and all of the handle is exposed, you're fine. But lets just say you wear it horizontally on the small of your back, and the whole entire thing is covered up with a shirt.... not legal. You can have it anywhere as long as you meet those two requirements.

Thank you, Capt Cut N Paste, I've read through a few of those before, but none of them say anything about the conflicts between LA County and CA State laws, and how/where to carry large fixed blades very clearly.

I recently bought a new daysack for the hills ... the main reason was the "air flow" design Berghaus brought out which I wanted to keep my back cool during strenous activity ... however the model I bought has an extension facility to increase the depth of the sack ... this has side zips which if opened expands the sack but if used in the smaller size offers useful "side pockets" which nicely take my Basic 9 ... the Basic 9 is the same OAL as a FSH and my FSH could also be carried there ... it keeps the knife quite handy for when I need it and I am not encumbered by a large knife on my belt when walking ... it is also very "sheeple" friendly as you cannot tell the knife is there ... and saves having to spend time and money getting a custom sheath made ...
