I don't tend to have much knife use when I'm wearing a backpack or lumbar pack, so it isn't something I worry much about. Since my new pack doesn't have outside pockets, one of the compression straps through the belt loop on a sheath works.
Got rid of all my neckers, but that's what I'd carry if I wanted a fixed blade handy while wearing a pack. As it is, a SAK and/or clipped Spyderco are right there in my pocket.
Strong side hip when carrying a larger fixed blade without a pack, since I'm not carrying a handgun. I like horizontal crossdraw for smaller ones.
I have been needing a machete or golok more recently than in the past, and am debating on how I'd carry that, since I would need to use it while wearing the pack. Haven't come up with a good solution for that, yet, short of carrying on the packs' hipbelts.
