How do you carry your folder with a clip?

Maybe this is a silly newby question, but ...

I have both a fullsize Rittergrip and a mini-Rittergrip and really like them. So far I have only carried the fullsize grip in a sheath on my belt, and the mini in my pocket. Even though the clip seems like a handy way to carry the knives, I just can't convince myself to use the clips for fear that the clips will slide off and I'll loose the knives. Yes, I have clipophobia and I need your help.

Exactly how/where do you carry your clip knives (using the clips)????

Have you ever lost a knife while "clipping"? If so, did you change how you clipped?

right hand pocket, slid to the rear at the seam. Only clips I've had an issue with are the old FRN spydercos on lightweight fabric (shirt pockets, lightweight khakis). All the metal cliped knives have been fine, only thing you need to watch out for is getting them snagged on a seatbelt or other such thing while moving, it's happened to me once or twice, but it's pretty easy to tell, and I've never lost one due to it.

Welcome. I have never, ever had a knife come out of my pocket using the pocket clip. Dont worry too much about it. Give it a try for a few days and I'm sure you'll be re-assured. You might also want to try clipping the knife to your pants waistband. Clip it so the knife is inside your pants. I have found this to be a good way to keep my knife out of the public eye, when I wear a shirt outside the belt.

No problems here so far. If you are really worried about it then you can always tie off a lanyard to your belt. You can also wear them clipped inside your waistband.

Make sure the clip isn't loose and you won't lose your knife.

Clipped to right front pocket (inside the pocket) against the seam. With a tip-up carry knife, this also prevents the blade from opening in your pocket, as the blade is pressed against the edge of the pocket. I've had large tip down carry knives (e.g. Camillus Maxx) work their way open in my pocket before because there is nothing to prevent the blade from opening. Never had a problem with a tip-up carry knife though...never had it come unclipped or slip off at all. It is very safe there. Here's a pic just in case you are confused about what we are all talking about here. A picture is worth a thousand words... :)

Kenk good question imo, but thats how i carry my 710 right now, clipped to right front pocket, my 705 without clip resides in bottom left front an a misc other edc in rear left pocket.

I have near lost my 710 at work, gettin up an down off of a creeper one day numerous times, it worked its way up an out of pocket, caught it by the time it hit my boot. Now if i have to do a chore where im doin this type of movement, ill slide it up a bit, unclip it an drop it into the pocket bottom.
Atleast until i feel comfortable on my chores need's of me for the day.

Have been involved with knives like alot of other peeps here, for over 30 years, but this will be my first winter with a pocket clipped knife. Bet your wondering what i mean, well i am bit concerned on them mornings around 5-6 am, when the sun is not going to be up for another 4 hours(Very Dark), and its -35c with a windchill of minus -55c and your outer layers of body mass get numb to touch, if i am going to lose it then.(You know, cold enough, that you can't tell if your wearing gloves or not cold.)

I am really thinking about a tether strap or lanyard attached idea, but the limited range, or hanging cord bothers me aswell, i think in the back of my mind, in a crowded room or mall, it would be way too easy to snag one's knife outa there pocket while they were shopping an it would be gonzo, a wallet is tucked into pockets an dis-appears easily during Xmas shopping. So a target with a string attached should be easier one might think. This is why i took a 2 day old lanyard off mine, i tried it, liked it for the quick , bam, its in your hand ready to go ability, but then the dark side of me says, it's screaming to be lifted from me by someone gifted in the picking of pockets.

So i wonder too (Expanded), have any of you lost yours due to ..(Pocket clip style mainly, but others aswell)
A:Pickpockets
B:Weather or climate conditions, freezing, flooding ect..
C:Leo's lol,never know :)

Use the little knife pocket in the right hand jeans pocket. In dress wear I wear it on my back pocket. In either case, all of my knives have good clips, and I have faith I could hang upside down and they wouldn't fall out, so I don't worry too much. When I want to carry something loose (loose pocket carry? LPC?) I use my Greg Lightfoot Urban Shark, which has a nice lanyard from the store....it makes it easy to find in the pocket.

I always carry my wallet in my left front pocket. It's almost impossible to pick without me noticing. If you're in a mall or a crowd, you can guarantee pickpockets are watching. Dropping the knife into the bottom of your pocket is a better idea.

You might want to find a knife optimized for rough weather conditions, even if it isn't exactly the knife you would carry otherwise. Something like a Spyderco Military is great with gloves or cold hands, because it has a long handle and a large opening hole.

Why would LEOs bother a fine upstanding citizen, anyway? :D

I just don't trust the clips for outdoor use. I have had them snag on various things and I'm not interested in losing one in the river or snow. I often carry a mini Grip in my pocket and a Grip in a sheath on my belt. For remote trips, losing a knife is serious enough that for me a belt sheath is the only way to go. As a ps: I used to run sled dogs and when getting dragged by a team, a folding knife in a sheath is far safer than anything else, including a fixed blade. A pocket clipped knife in that circumstance is likely to become a donation to the trail or produce even less pleasant possibilities that one can easily imagine.

Hehe Esav B,

You mean to tell me that the spydie is more cold weather friendly then my Benchmade, damn. :o

Just kidding.

I guess i may have to start packing it in the pocket bottom when frosty moves back into town, a 4"in knife handle in my pocket is a bit bulky though.

Leo's seem to have quotas here, ya never know whats gonna happen from day to day :D

Still,i am thinking of attaching it to me somehow, maybe with a quick release mechanism of sorts..i have a couple more weeks to ponder it.

Peace

I ususally carry my folder with a clip, clipped to the right front pocket, all the way against the seam, or I carry it IWB, or I carry the folder in my right front pocket.

The only knife I EVER had an issue with the pocket clip, was a Spyderco Native, and the bloody thing would just unscrew and come off. I stopped carry ing it because of that.

Pretty well the same for me. I usually carry several with me. Front pockets - clipped against seam. Cargo pants - to the back of the pocket. My Mini-Grip is in my left front, and Grip is clipped on my left cargo pant pocket (today - Caly Jr.) Depending on what I yank out, I do, at times have to be a bit careful so I don't unclip my folder, but usually, the clips hold very well. I carry my Ka-Bar/Dozier folding hunter IWB with the clip under my belt loop with my belt over the clip, but the only time I've had it come loose is when I'm undressing and my shirt catches the handle. I used to carry one of my larger folders in my back pocket, but there, it seemed to be more prone to getting pushed out. Like others, when I go to sit down, it pushes the folder up just enough, and then it snags on something when you go to leave the vehicle. I find my jacket(s) to be the big culprit here :)

Back right pocket or right cargo pocket.

Many people think the pocket clip is a "belt clip". At work I see a lot of Sheffield folding box cutters clipped to people's belts like a pager. When I tell them the clips are designed for pockets they then clip it to the outside of their pockets.

These are all reasons why I have yet to purchase a knife with a clip...loss by accident or pickpocket, catching on things, etc.

For me, my folder is always in the bottom of my right front pocket. Always. I like consistency with my stuff, so I don't have to think of where it is....especially when I need it fast.

Esav....right on! (Wallet in front, deep.) But then the only problem is where to keep my keys, because I don't like to have them hanging out on a clip or something, either.

Some clipped knives are better than others, and your RSK Mk1s are certainly at or near the top in security with aggressive body checkering and a wide clip contact surface. We receive a lot of positive comments from owners in this regard. The material being clipped to also is a factor. Something like cotton denim is more secure than light flimsy and slippery nylon. A pocket with a thick seam also offers added security. All that being said, a closed sheath with a belt loop is inherently more secure than a pocket clipped knife and one with a secure closure clip is more secure than one closed with Velcro or a snap.

I've only once personally lost a clipped knife out of a pocket. That was my full-sized Sebenza while working on a car and it caught on something while I was under it and rolled out on a creeper. I know people who have had them come loose and as noted, we have had comments from RSK MkI owners who had tales of woe to tell with previous knives..

If you want to have it readily available and still very secure, try in-the-waistband (IWB) carry with the clip under the belt, which provides good protection from it getting caught on anything and even if caught, the belt would have to come off before the knife would come unclipped. I often carry my Mini-RSK Mk1 that way, with the full-sized RSK Mk1 in my right hand jeans pocket. Another alternative is to attach a lanyard clipped to the belt or belt loop as a safety strap. I do this when on the water wearing "nylon" quick-dry clothing.

Make sure the clip isn't loose and you won't lose your knife.
;)

No, I've never had a clip issue. Most knife companies test their products before marketing them, and this usually means that they make sure the clip works...

Peace.

Like many others here, I wear my clipped knife against the seam of my right pants pocket (being right-handed).

I started wearing my wallet in my front pocket many years ago after reading how sitting on a wallet can cause back alignment problems (while driving, sitting at a desk, etc). So I actually wear my wallet in the same pocket as my knife; I've never had a problem pulling out my wallet while wearing a knife - even when wearing my largest folder (a Spyderco Massab Ayoub).

So I have my knife/wallet pocket on the right, and I keep keys in my front left pants pocket. I keep two keyrings; 1 is my car key w/attached remote auto-starter/locks; the other is my house/work keys with a carbiner and red LED Photon Micro-Light II. This way I don't have to worry about my keys scratching the finish on my folders; and gives me easy accessibility to my keys when I need them without fumbling in a knife/wallet pocket.

I don't wear pants that don't have pockets outside of the house. :P I've always found waistband clipping to be uncomfortable.

I have found that if you work with or around straps, webbing etc. or you slide along or next to things (like perhaps narrow isles of stock in a warehouse). Clips do catch and knives go flying. I lost 2 Spydercos this way. I believe the sling of my gun caught the clip on a knife i had in a chest pocket. I also lost my Rescue at a house fire,I think that my scba straps pulled the knife out when I was taking it off, as it had caught on it before.

Last weekend my friend lost his Tim Wegner while moving a tree stand. Again carring a stand against the body, straps hanging. Good news is we found it by the creek !

I always check my pocket.
