How do you carry your stuff in the woods?

Thanks Myakka, it always looked like a good bag, I just wondered if it was too clunky when fully loaded.

foxyrick: There are some places left that have some, even though they're discontinued.;) They also show up infrequently for auction, you have to look often though.

I have a Salomon racing pack that's seen everything from 3-day adventure races to summit attempts to taking the little guy for a picnic. It's light enough and has held up quite well. I also like it because it compresses down well for trail running and other fast moving activities.

If I really want something I'll wait 'til the last few seconds. . . usually when I win something it's 'cause no one else wanted it.

Maxpedition's stock has raised a considerable % due to this thread. They have some nice options out there.

I think those are all good looking bags, assuming they are large enough for your needs. They're like jumbo possibles bags.

I feel silly because I've posted the heck out of this setup, but this is my current dayhike kit. It's only been put through its paces once, but it was comfy. It holds everything I need and has enough extra gear for emergencies.

It has my mora, canteen and cup, LT Wave, first aid gear, room for food, cordage, poncho, monocular, fire kit, etc..

I think I'm going to pick this up. For $12 I can't go wrong.

edit: does anyone know if that MOLLE pack comes with a belt?

I picked one up on ebay and it came with a belt, but no shoulder strap. The belt tucks away in the compartment on the back of the pack, which is velcro'd on each end. I cut the belt off of it and used the (2) snap straps to attach it to a HD work belt. The belt on the pack was kinda wimpy for adding other gear like canteen. I used the compartment to stash my Becker Necker. The pack itself seems stout enough and loaded with 4# of gear, I did a 10 mile round trip hike and it's comfortable when carried. I like it so far.

I've got the buttpack that Spooky has. Love it. My mid size backpack is a Camelbak Striker. Holds everything I need.

I carry my basic gear in an Eagle Industries Buttpack. Sidepockets by Tactical Tailor.

Right now, I'm rigging up a set of shoulder straps for this setup. Not too big to carry too much but big enough to carry most creature comforts.

Kevin, have you considered Eagle's LBE suspenders? It looks like they can
carry the pack in more of a lumbar position:

Not sure how easy it would be to access it as opposed to shoulder
straps. If you have to detach your whole suspenders rig to get to the
pack then that is pretty much a non-starter.

I also use the CTD Maxpedition knock-off that Spooky and Gossman use, and it's fantastic for dayhikes, but with the change of seasons, it's not going to be large enough to hold clothes for an emergency overnight in the cold. The Devildog, or something like Kevin's pack, look like useful upgrades.

MRpink: That CTD pack does not come with a belt, but any belt up to 2" will easily fit through the MOLLE straps in the back:

Polymath.

I generally use a medium ALICE pack as a daypack (throw me in with the guys that hate shoulder bags, not only for the discomfort, but also that they swing around while you're maneuvering and throw you off balance. In my neck of the woods that means taking one in the drink -- with the possiblility of a close encounter with a gator or cottonmouths -- or making so much noise that you frighten off the animals). Nice thing about the ALICE is it's gone from top of the line mall ninja gear to retro, and now it''s a "traditional old-timer's" pack.

However if you don't want nylon, I'd highly recommend Duluth pack products, specifically their Wanderer

The side pockets can each hold a 1-liter Nalgene bottle.

Or if you want more room, the Rambler

Although I don't particularly like zippers, so I tend to shy away from the Rambler.

Then there's their All Day Lumbar Pack, which can again take 2 1-liter nalgenes.

Thanks Cpl, I had been eyeballing the Wanderer.

Also have been thinking about this Filson rucksack:
