How Do You Collect?

I basically just buy what I like, and what I feel would be a good user, weather I use it or not.

I go by needs (like i need more blades:D) or you can call em phases... Im in my neck knife phase. Im also into compact fixed blades at this point. Dunno when it will end or switch..

I get knives based on utility mainly.
I essentially started with a Leek, decided there were some things I didn't like about it, and have ended up with a BM 154cm as my EDC.

EDC for when I'm outdoors is my Fallkniven S1, because its an all-around amazing survival knife.

Other knives I've bought are mainly to fill a niche that I have a need for, like a Mora 760 for a cheap beater knife I can use around the house.

This is an interesting discussion. Why we buy knives runs the gamut between utility and pure aesthetics. I would have expected more here to gravitate to a specific brand. I have little brand loyalty; I like what I like and can describe it - spec it - but I really have to see it (and, yes, "fondle" it) to know for sure.

It would be nice to have a poll. Can we do those, here?

Mostly my collection is custom .. first the model .. that really catches my eyes then I check out the knifemaker around ... either collectors or dealers (is he a nice guy or a snob) ... lastly fit and finish.

A knife caches my eye and i look at it for about a week and then when i cant live without it any more I buy it. Or after about a week i decided that i can live without it and start looking at something else.

I collect almost exclusively by maker, one in particular.
I collect his fixed blades, as folders are just users to me and three or four are more than enough.

I generally just buy what I intend to use, keeping it if it performs better than what I have and getting rid of it if not. Lately I've been buying knives specifically to review and test them too.

I did that unintentionally.

Lastly, anything cheap, attractive, and/or well worth the $mall change, like Moras, Okapis, Douk-Douks, K55, andujar stylets, etc

I just look for good bargains on decent knives

I collect by brand and design. The knife must be a good user and of excellent manufacture.

I have 3 categorys. Spyderco's and Kershaws that I collect. The second catagory is knives that fufill a specific need. The 3rd category is knives I buy with different steels just to try out the steels. Example: R2, OU31, 20CV, Super Blue, VG5, etc. Joe

I am reminded of my grandmonsters' first word - expressed with their arm extended and hand rapidly opening and closiing; "Want!". If I see it - and 'want' it, I find a way - or throw a fit (I guess the grandmonsters got that from me...). Fortunately, Bucks, Spydies, Bark Rivers, older Marbles, they have thus far been my 'want'. Okay, a few Grecos and Buck Custom Shop goodies, too. Mine is an ecclectic mix, to say the least.... a mess to say the most. as another has mention, an 'accumulation'.

MikeH,

My wife shocked me yesterday, my 60th hatchday celebration, with a second Spydie 'Native' from that same Wally-world. Odd - that was my favorite gift. Now I can try to 'match' it's sharpness re-sharpening my original... and have a spare EDC, too!
