How do you convince someone to buy a quality knife?

Eh, you know what they say....you can lead a horse to water, butcha cain't lift it's tail up an' suck it through thier a$$ for 'em.:D

Ignorance, stubborness, all sorts of root causes.

But there's one other other reason I've come across. Sometimes people can't afford something they want (or they just can't spend that much money on that particular commodity).

So, they have to settle for second best or downright awful. In their heart they know it isn't any good, but pride won't let them admit it.

If that's the case, then nagging isn't nice.

Maybe we should all invest in at least one $5 replica of a decent knife we already own, just to be able to demonstrate the difference. I bet I could find a Delica knockoff for that if I tried.

I try a little logic about something they may "know" about. Say the person collects or knows alot about stereo's. Ask them if they would recommend some "junk" stereo or a quality system. You would trust them to advise you of what to buy and what not to buy. Same with knives. You know enough to recommend something worth his time and money when it comes to knives.
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. :)

The advice I was given when I started with knives was from Patrick at TAD. He said "buy what you like and buy the best that you can afford. This seems to be good advice no matter what you are buying. I have applied this to guns as well. We can't all afford to always buy what we really want, but if you appreciate quality, you will be much happier by saving up and getting something good.

took me 3yrs of not so subtle nudging to convert both my buddy and my mother over to our side.

My buddy carried $5 knives. He was happy. I bought him a $60 lockback to start with, he loved it, and abused it. I then gave him my ats-55/pe delica, after I'd had it for 3yrs, when I put an order in for a few. Still in great shape and he's been beating on it for just over a year himself. He loves the delica, and between it and the 50/50 ladybug on his keys he's on his way nicely.

My mother on the other hand, could have been crowned "queen of the sheeple". The ONLY cutting she did was making supper. She HATED knives. 3yrs ago, my sister had a kid. Suddenly, my mother was asking for my smallest knife to cut this or that for the kid. I bought her a $5 keychain multi. she tossed it in her purse, but still borrowed mine for food. I bought her a spydie Ladybug(50/50) and that went on her keys. About 2 months ago I gave her a multi(Buck Mini-tool) that I upgraded to a micra off my keys. Her keys are starting to look like mine, and she uses em. I'm buying her another knife late winter, either a frn dragonfly or frn delica.
