How do you deal with EDC Anxiety?

My anxiety today is when I have left for work , and forgot my EDC.
That particular risk, I have no anxiety about. The only benefit from having more knives than I need, is that I have enough to leave some stashed around my normal haunts. Car, desk, bag, keychain. Not to mention multi-tools here and there. Though normally before I go to work, I do a gear check pat-down that makes me look like a third base coach, so it's rare that I forget my pocket carry.

That pristine Grinling you can't bring yourself to use is going to be one heck of a deal at your kid's garage sale some day.

That pretty much sums it up for me - I don't care what they will look like in my estate sale, I hope all of my knives look like I used them some.

I avoid the anxiety by putting more than one in my pockets.
I've kinda sorta almost maybe settled on a Buck 110 (or Uncle Henry 7OT) on the belt and a scout knife and stockman in the pockets. But ... today I have a Case CV Canoe and 031SH in my pocket. Have not decided yet if the Ulster BSA scout knife, Marbles Scout knife, or SAK Recruit is going onto the leash. one of them will, just not sure which.
EDIT: Not that it matters, but I went with the SAK.

All my knives are users, no anxiety for me but there is a method to my madness. There's a $ limit that I,m comfortable with, I never go over that limit. I have a railsplitter that is my favirite work knife but if I have a different knfe that day then it gets used. I might carry a knife for 2 days or 2 weeks or for no reason change mid day.
I get more joy out of using than collecting, so I don't have a lot of knives but sure enjoy what I have.
You have to to decide whats best for you. Use, collect, or both. Stay within your $ limit and it's all good.

Anxiety? For a pocket knife? :p
Choosing and carrying a traditional knife is sometimes a mindless gesture (like putting my wallet in my back pocket), sometimes a joyful activity. It's something that adds fun and utility to my life. Anxiety is not a part of the equation. ;)
I must be doing something wrong

Well it's reassuring to see other BF members have the same dilemma that I have. I have just starting to add to my modest EDC collection and love having a well finished, useful knife to toss in my pocket. For several months now I have looked at Todd Davison's knives and said that I would treat myself to one good custom. Well this past week he listed 2 that were exactly what I was hoping for. I couldn't pull the trigger! At this point I think I would find it too pretty to use and it would join a beautiful Ron Gaston fixed blade that I had made 20+ years ago and that has sat in a drawer being occasionally fondled. So for now I've decided to spend the money on more upper end non customs (ie. a Russell peanut & Moki Kronos) that I know I will carry even if they get carry marks.

I've been known to carry 4 knives at once [emoji14]

Most of the time I carry 3: one in my city sheath, a small beater for opening boxes (usually in watch pocket), and that leaves me plenty of room for a pocket sheath or a modern pocket clip knife. I usually have victorinox nail clippers with me too.

Deciding which to clip on the pocket can be quite a process. I'm often torn between the utility of a modern, and how nice stag in a leather clip sheath looks.

a member suggested i carry one knife for a whole month to get over new knife OCD syndrome

If I have a task which requires a particular blade then that knife gets the nod (whittling, fire making, camp knife etc).

Otherwise whichever knife is my current infatuation and makes a good worry stone will be carried for a few weeks before interest shifts to another knife drawer dweller.

Not enough knives to worry about their choice. Someday perhaps!

O

I just carry it and use it. What are you "saving it" for? Someone else after you're departed? Why worry about that? To me it's a fine quality tool and it's best honored by putting it to use as your daily companion, not sit in a drawer for 20 yrs then get sold in a garage sale.

Use and enjoy it!

I "buy low / sell never" (mostly buy knives that are under $15, so I don't have to worry about resale value - who's gonna want 'em besides me?? :D But, when it comes to function, I'll put my Rough Riders, Colts, Chinese OldTimers up against ANY pocket knife anyone wants to bring!;)).
I have a written "schedule" that tells me exactly which 12 knives I'll be carrying for a week at a time, plus 2 more knives for the kitchen each week; currently the schedule takes 10 weeks to rotate through all my knives. And almost always, the more I use a knife, the more I appreciate it!

My anxiety is never about whether to carry a knife, it's about what will I be able to use the knife for. My lifestyle doesn't have nearly the opportunities for cutting that I had as a kid on a dairy farm! :(

Well I say use it or sell it and spend the money on something else you need. I like the look of a knife that has been well used. Love it when that cerekote starts to wear off my Emerson. Or my father in laws Victorinox that he kept on his workbench; when the tip of the main blade broke, he re-ground into a sheepsfoot (somewhat) - cool! As far as getting over anxiety try this- take that GEC and carry it every day for a month solid like it was the only knife you own; don't even look at your other knives :)

I like to carry all my slipjoints, so the quandry always is, which one gets the call that day? One thing that I enjoy is, after reading some of this forum in the morning while I drink my coffee, if there was an interesting discussion or post about a particular knife, and if I have one or similar, then I am inspired to carry that one. It's like "Oh yeah, Case Sowbelly, thanks for the reminder!"

I rotate knives once a while. Sell of the old ones, then get into the catalogues and buy some new ones.
In the last 2 years I bought 3 bark river knives, drop point Hunter, Scandi and Northstar. A friend made 2 Puukkos for me with Helle blades, one stacked birch bark, another burled birch with moose bone. Next gunshow I am going to sell my cleaver/caper combo knives of Alaska and their alpha wolf as well as my spyderco wegner model and the Bear cutlery folding Damascus with bone handle. Have done a couple of deer with all of my knives, except the bark River Scandi ready to do a whitetail for next year . I am still lusting for a Puukko made by a master like Malanika.
For EDC here in Edmonton we are restricted to the 3 inch blade length, I carry a small light 3 blade schrade with lots of patina. Good enough for strings, box opening, opening envelopes, cutting food items etc. I have tried much nicer EDC knives but found I disliked heavy knives in my pocket.
Sometimes I find if I am lusting after a certain knife and I wait another 2-3 weeks, often the feeling goes away.
Gues in the field of psychiatry they would classify us as Serial knife buyers. Wonder what theywould offer as therapy?

Well said! :)

...here in Edmonton...

I'm sorry. Hehe. Couldn't resist.

Back on topic. One of my favourite times of each day is when I pull my drawer out of my wife's jewelry box, set it on the bed, and choose my knife for the day. Eventually, every one gets pocket time.

Sometimes the decision is an easy one, sometimes it takes a while, pull one out, CE'n and CF'n, put it back, select another...

Usually I make it through the day, occasionally I'll swap out for another at some point.

a little update. carried that 2014 bladeforums knife for the month of December. Everyday I was out/at work it was in my pocket except when I forgot it in the box. Ill have to say, although I love that knife, I find myself missing my other edc rotation traditionals. It is a gorgeous knife, and hasnt failed, but now Im looking forward to carrying my other knives and putting new knives in the box for edcing. I guess jc57's advice worked! Thanks buddy!
