How do you decide to use it or keep it mint?

Sounds all too familiar.

I know it's strange. But I seem to have this need to give myself permission to use my REALLY fine knives. And the only way I can do that is to buy something even nicer than what I want to carry. Go figure!

I wait till a situation comes up where "Hey, this knife would work well for that."
Or if something needs doing then I'll just use whatever knife is on me when out and about.
I never really plan it out, it just happens as it will.:)

I'm not really a collector, and while I do buy nicer knives, I still plan to use all of them because personally, I can't justify spending so much money and just letting the knife sit there. Probably another reason I'm not into art. But if it's nice, I'll just keep it as a gentleman's knife, or my 2nd knife. I always carry at least two knives, one for bigger, dirtier work, and the other for finer cuts.

My guess is that REAL knife users don't hang out around here. They may come here long enough to figure out what knives they need, but then they go back to using them, not obsessing over more knives they neither need nor want. It's knife collectors that hang out around here . . . people who really LOVE their knives, not just use them. And that's the long and short of it.

Amen to that brother. I just posted that I use em all on the top of the page. But your totally right about this one.

If it can be replaced or reworked I will use it, if not, I don't mind not using it.

I have never bought a knife with the intent to keep it mint. I have one knife that is mint, because my uncle Glen Hornby made it before he passed away. I just have not had the heart to carry and scratch it up. Maybe some day.

That said, I also don't buy art knives, so that is a whole different category.

My knives are tools. Tools are not meant to look at. They are meant to be used. I don't have any tools as art. I wish i had the money to do that though. There are some true works of art that i have seen on this forum. I could NOT use those as a regular knife, or chop a log with a $5000 knife.

Yeah... wow...

Well to be in your shoes I'd have to sell my motorcycle (ain't gonna happen... that creates more problems than it solves!) and then I could pretty much give the rift away. :D
