How do you "deploy"?

As with most other tools, I'm in the habit of deploying folders gently. So the characteristics of the deployment are not a concern with respect to others. My approach to intolerance is usually to keep the knife out of sight (such as under the table if pulling staples at some meetings). On a few occasions I've made cuts with the blade only partially open - tape and string sorts of things.

It's very rare for me to have this sort of issue though, and I do think a lot of it is presentation - not just the physical characteristics of the knife itself.

I pull out whatever knife I'm carrying and open as it was designed to be opened.
Thumbstud, flipper, hole, auto, slippie doesn't matter.
I don't care about the reactions of others because........I don't care.
It's a knife (or tool if you prefer) and I need to use one.

Sheeple, pfffft. Get over it, it's a knife. Do you cut your sandwiches with a spoon?

The smallest blade that will do the job, opened with discretion. Sometimes the EDC folder is used when the small SAK blade will do because the ease of one-hand opening trumps political correctness. No flicking, though.

In all cases, it comes down to situational awareness. Alarming non-knife people without good reason is a tactical error.

This is very dependent on the audience. Popping open a blade quickly is generally appreciated around a construction jobsite: however, around the office - slower is better.

I think this *should* be embarrassing...regardless if the subject is blade deployment or anything else. :D

I have a friend that cannot seem to open a knife without flicking his whole arm. It looks like he is trying to throw the knife like a chinese star. I try to show him just a flick of the thumb is all that is necessary... Maybe a little wrist flick for some knives. It's a little embarrassing. I told him to get an ao

I always preceed "deploying" with a quaint little saying I learned a long time ago.......all together now:

"Excuse me, while I whip this out!"

:D

At home, at a friend's place or with people who are used to me and my hobby:
Fast and with a good snap, the way it was meant to be opened.
If at public or around people I don't know I use the small Ladybug in my keys, slow and discreetly without really trying to hide anything, if you're hiding something too much, people can tell.

Umm.... I slip it out of its sheath.:)

I often get suprised/confused looks untill they realise the sheath is still in my pocket.;)

Unless I am around total strangers who might be of the "knife is a weapon" type, then I just use my SAK.

I just open the thing and use it. If you look like you know what you are doing you can get away with about anything. If you are looking over your shoulder and look like you are trying to hide something then people will probably be more suspicious of your intentions.

I'm sure with the mass stupidity there is that is not always true but I have yet to have anyone say anything to me.

I love to fling it open when alone at home, but am discreet in public. As Powernoodle says, my knife, my right within my local laws. Alacrity, I love that word Mossy!

I don't care about other peoples' reactions to my knives. They can't do anything about it, so I couldn't care less about their eyes bulging out of their heads over a pocket knife.

Until you run into that off-duty cop who observes you whipping out your AO blade, and decides to break your balls about it....although you may ultimately be in the right *legally*, you`re still bringing unneeded heat down on yourself....I much prefer being "the invisible man" while out in public....

Last night at Church i waved open my CQC-8, to cut something down, some of the guys got a kick out of it, but usually i have something smaller and more discrete with me for those times, but i love the feeling of a quick open...:D

I'd rather not have this moved to knife law, but if it is legal for you to own a certain knife in a certain state you shouldn't be scared about taking it out and using it (for it's intended purpose).

IMO, officers should know their appropriate knife and guns laws, that is part of their job.

If you are not sensitive to the fears of others around you those sensitive people will support laws restricting your supposed rights to offend their sensitivity.

That is why "feelings" should be left out of law-making.
If we keep babying people it'll only get worse. IMO ;)
