How do you do a logo like this?

There's a good chance he'll chime in himself, but if I remember correctly from the WIP of that knife, he masks off the logo. You could probably etch your logo and then paint it over with some mask like nail polish, then etch the entire blade.

On damascus, sand to about b400 grit, etch the logo deeply, then finish the blade to final grit. Coat the logo area with nail polish or some other enamel type paint. Paint the shape around the logo evenly and attractively ( you can use a template). Oval, diamond, a leaf shape, etc. Let dry fully and then etch. Clean off the resist paint with acetone and finish the blade as normal. The masked area will be bright and shine, and the damascus will show full pattern.

Nail polish works.
If you have a choice, get the softer nail polish like the old-school OPI-brand formulas (not the super-hard "enamel" style nailpolish). Seems to work better with strong solutions.

It helps to have a specific logo made for damascus steel, with a circle or oval or other line shape around the border. That makes it easier to paint your lacquer in more evenly and cleanly. I use an optivisor and a very fine tipped brush.

Heard my name over here.
My logo stencil has an oval around it to give me a border. I sand the damascus blade to 2000 grit for a bright finish and for the best definition from the electoetch on the makers mark and carefully paint inside the oval with red or black fingernail polish. I don't generally scrub the blade between ferric chloride dips so theres no chance of rubbing off any of the finger nail polish resist. After the damascus is etched deep enough to your satisfaction simply remove the fingernail polish with acetone. Simple as pie.

Cool! thanks guys! I had been thinking you guys etched the logo after etching and you had used a sticker or something to keep the area from etching.(Would a stick work?)
