How do you do a rounded channel or indention?

I see parts of handles that have a rounded recessed channel or indention going all the way around. Often. on the bottom of the handle or pommel. If the handles were round I would think, oh they did that in a lathe, but I see it on knives that are oval or a bit squared.

It is usually done by hand with files and sand paper.

I can't see the pictures you linked to due to restrictions at work, but I think I know what you're referring to.

These features are typically milled and/or filed in, or cut in with some other similar tool. Sometimes they may even be pressed or forged in.
