I have a 14 inch wheel on my KMG but I don't know why I need it. I hollow grind blades with an 8 and 10 inch wheel but if I want to grind with the 14 incher I might as well flat grind my blade. Is there something I am missing?

I only flat grind on a platen because I don't have a KMG yet. From my understanding, using a wheel helps with heat transfer. Cooler from the wheel and less transfer to your blade. Also, using wheels helps with breaking up the abrasives and keeping them sharp. Or at least that is what I have gathered from my research.

I totally opened this thread expecting some funny photos of people using a 14" contact wheel to butter toast or something else ridiculous...

Dang...

I've got one, thought I might get into playing with hollow grinds but never did. It's nice for grinding curved clips or recurves though, either vertically on the wheel or in horizontal grinder mode.

The 14" wheels the Beaumont sells (which is what I have), are rubber faced, smooth, and pretty soft. I imagine they're great for hollow grinding, but you want a hard serrated wheel for hogging or roughing in pre-flat grind I'd think.

I had a 10" wheel on my Coote, but sold the grinder and got a 14" wheel for my KMG. I like the 14" wheel better, as I can hollow grind wider knives and can still hollow grind small thin knives on it. I am thinking about buying an 8" serrated wheel, but still on the fence if I really need one.

I have the 8" contact wheel on my grinder, works great for hogging off steel.I want to get the
12" or 14" to do some hollow grinds. The 8" works, just not tall enough for hollow grinding on the blades I make.
