Just did something I've never done with my customs; I purchased a knife EXACTLY like one I already have. I picked up a second J.W. Smith LS-1 Recurve. I was finding myself reaching for this knife about 3/4's of the time. It did not matter what I had new to come in I would go back to this one every few days. Btw, this one has a 4" recurve blade of S30V steel, ti bolsters and ti (thick) liners, along with carbon fiber scales. It is as sweet a knife as I've ever owned. When the opportunity came along to pick up a second one I jumped. I currently have both in my hand and there is not a speck of difference except for what you might expect from a custom knife. I've contacted John about doing a steel spacer to replace the micarta and the knife is going back to him, along with another one for refinishing, next week.

Have a question though. I may see about going ahead and having some new scales made and was thinking about something like stabilized ironwood. Any other suggestions that I might consider?

Double you pleasure, Double your Fun, with Double Mint, Double Mint, Double Mint Gum! LOL

I see your still having a lot of fun Art! :D hehe

How about Stag?

Cheers!
James

Stag was my first thought James. But I already have the LDC-5 in stag and ironwood is my favorite wood. Although ironwood is my favorite any and all suggestions are wanted. Need to expand myself!

Art, im not sure how to spell the word: "incorrigable", but youre it. :)

Where did you find another LS Recurve? BA?

If it were me, id get a deep blue set of mammoth ivory scales. Oooooooh, that would be unusual on a tactical and VERY pretty. Expect to spend a few hundred though. You might just end up with though, the only Smith tactical with mammoth ivory! Then, in a month or so, as per your pattern, you can sell it to me at a nice discount! You might even just go ahead and have my initials engraved on it when you do the scales. :)

That would look sweet Meg. Still leaning towards the ironwood though, but keep suggesting! Hope that I have FINALLY settled down and found my niche. This is the first time I have targeted certain makers in all my years of collecting knives, ( 20+ years for customs), and the first time I have been totally satisfied with what the maker had to offer. Maybe I am maturing after all!:eek: :rolleyes: ;

Course wouldn't hurt to keep your eyes peeled Meg, as you just never know!!! After all wouldn't be the first time I:footinmou would it James?:D ;)

Art,
Ironwood would be nice - have Terzuola with Ironwood scales and is pretty awesome! some other suggestions would be Snakewood, Curly Koa, Australian Ringed Gidgee(harder than Ironwood) and Juniper Burl - have attached pic of Juniper Burl on my DDR Stilletto for your viewing pleasure. have fun deciding!

The Juniper looks awesome with all the swirls. Where would get the Australian Ringed Gidgee? ( besides the obvious; Australia) Had even thought about some F-18 carbon fiber, but since that is going to be on the one ordered I may just hold off on it. Mesquite looks good also. Then again I may just leave the carbon fiber that is there already on it and just get the stainless spacer!

Just mailed out the LS-1 Recurve to John to be fitted with a steel backspacer. Went ahead and sent the Scimitar to be refitted also. The Woodcrafter ( for lack of any other name )is going to be left "stock" for the time being. Hope to send in the other LS-1 Recurve and my LS-1 Eighties as soon as the others get back.:D :cool: :)

Just what kind of hold have these Smith's got on me!!:eek: :eek: ;) Not that I mind, mind you. Just picked up my eighth J.W. Smith folder, another MINT LDC-5. I may just leave this one "stock" or I may send it back for the titanium rear spacer treatment and some nice wood handles. Now that would look great with the stag handled LDC-5 I already have!:cool: :cool: :cool:

I don't know what it is about these knives, but I just LOVE them!
