How do you explain your knife's price?

If you carry a nice knife, sooner or later, someone is going to ask 'how muchya pay for it?" It's bad enough if your knife is a $125 Benchmade or Spyderco, but if it's a $500 Strider, you probably cringe at the question. If you answer honestly, you may as well be telling them that you were abducted by aliens over the weekend. And if you're someone who carries a $2000 piece with mammoth ivory handle, you may as well be the alien.

I never admit the price of my EDC when asked, unless I'm sure that the other person has a clue about knives. My EDC until just last week has been a Kershaw ZDP Mini Cyclone and a small ZDP William Henry, but now I'm toting my new Darrel Ralph Trigger, along w/ my sheeple-friendly William Henry. If someone asks the price of either, I am rarely going to give a straight answer. "Ask me no questions, I'll tell you no lies," is my rule.

How does everyone else handle the question?

Honestly........

Regardless of the consequence....
I will be an alien, with pride.....

If I feel they are asking out of genuine interest, I tell them. If I think they're just being nosy or to break my chops I ask them - "Why do you want to know?". That usually shuts them up.

My feeling is....it cost what it cost, and that's what I'll tell them. As long as your'e not saying it in a boastful, "ain't I da man" sort of way, it usually isn't much of an issue. At least not yet in my experience. I think the highest price I ever gave as an answer was about $280, just for reference.

Cheers,
Jon

Good answers. I've mostly just had people ask me if my knives were good knives or not, in which case I usually answer and sometimes explain. Price doesn't come into it, and if they do ask me how much it is, I've no problem telling them.
What're they gonna do? Try and take it from me? :D

As somebody said, it costs what it costs.

If anyone has a problem with how much I pay for my tools/toys then there really isn't much point in continuing the conversation.

I always spill the beans and I ALWAYS get one of two responses...

#1) wow it must be really nice...

#2) wow, your an idiot and paid too much for that...

lol, either way I respond with how much was your car? when they answer I alwas respond with and to think you could have paid half that to get a car that will take you where you want...The idiots alwasy just look puzzled, the other half smurk and understand...They also appologize later when they ask me to cut somethgin open for them, lol...

I only own really sharp cheapies so I never really have to have one of those conversations. People cut with my Mora and see the 'Made in Sweden' stamp and expect that I payed 100+ for it. =)

Now, i've had a tough time explaining the 800 bucks I'm spending on survival courses this summer on the other hand.

Wow. You guys must have it tough with the knives some of you are lucky enough to own. I get the "I can get that for 5$ at the gas station" or "Whaaaaaaaaat?" when I mention the price of mine. I own a 50$ kershaw leek by the way.

some people just don't understand ........tell them if they have to ask they cant afford iit : ).....you use a knife atleast once a day.....now the people who carry guns are the crazy ones

When I was working over the summer as an electrical apprentice (student now...again) I got all sorts of wierd and crazy looks when the guys found out how much my knives were.

First off, they started noticing how I carried a different knife each day of the week.

Then they asked,"how many knives do you have?" I'd have to give them a rough estimate of "how many" and they freaked out about that.

After the "how many" question, it turned into,"so how much is the knife you have today?" Slowly but surely they figured out that I spent a lot of money on knives, and good quality ones at that. Only one of the guys actually carried a SOG Flash II. He was shocked that I actually knew about SOG, like it was some sort of big secret :D.

The most expensive one that I took to work was my Benchmade Rukus with the black blade and partial serrations. They freaked out on how big it was and called that knife "The Champ." The name stuck with it, now I call it the champ everytime I see it in my collection.:)

I just tell them I got it for 20 lucys on D-block, shuts 'em right up.

I usually say "you wouldn't believe me if I told you" and it seems to work pretty well. I usually just let them guess at that point and don't answer. Last guess was "$30?" for my Sebenza.

If I feel they are asking out of genuine interest, I tell them. If I think they're just being nosy or to break my chops I ask them - "Why do you want to know?". That usually shuts them up.

++++1!

Best wishes,

Edalb

To tell or not to tell (to the person asking) isn't the question I think :)

I assume that I just told a guy that my knife is 100 or 200 bucks and here comes the Q, how do I explain it?

I usually tell people that my decision making is always coupled with some educated (I like think so!) knowledge. That I would not make an expensive purchase without thinking it out and/or researching it a little first. Therefore the price I paid is suitable for the apparatus I need/want and as far as anyone is concerned I satisfied myself.

I do hope you are joking about people who carry guns, that remark can be construed as highly offensive.

I have had people ask about the price of my EDCs and my standard answer is simply "don't remember" unless I know the person. A avid golfer friend of mine asked about a custom folder I was carrying one day and when I told him he thought I was nuts till I pointed out how much he had spent for a driver he used to knock a little ball around once a week. We all have different priorities for our disposable income is the simplest explanation, I know some folks who are willing to shell out several hundred for a pair of tennis shoes...lol.
