How do you explain your knife's price?

To avoid all the puzzled looks & stupid remarks,I just say "around $50" no matter what I'm carrying.;)

Thats what I say too just to avoid the annoyance. Or tell them the truth and if they dont like it stab em, after all ya got a knife there. LOL, just kidding.

Nothing fills one like joy like the guy who wants to borrow your knife to cut some phone line or twist out an allen screw.

I usually just say it's cause I like knives. Can't think of any other justification when I'm using a couple hundred dollars of steel to cut up a cardboard box. No one gives me crap cause I don't get defensive about it, and will rattle off more knife detail than they can follow if they wonder what's the big deal.

I very rarely get asked how much I spent on a knife. When someone does ask, I give them an honest answer. Some raise eyebrows, some drop their jaws, some say 'That's expensive.' They all get the same answer: Because I like knives.

Now, i've had a tough time explaining the 800 bucks I'm spending on survival courses this summer on the other hand.

survival course I'll give you one for half that heres what we do you give me half the money up front and I'll kick you out of the truck in the middle of Delta National forest, or Panther Swamp when you work your way back to my house I'll give you your certificate and you pay the other half on second thought why don't you pay all up front:D;)

we could tell them its just like the one bear grylls uses...then 100's of dollars won't sound so expensive;)

I gave up trying to explain. I had a buddy say one time "gosh, why would you pay 400 bucks for a knife when you could buy a 30.00 one at wal-mart?" to which i replied,"why would you spend 40k on an SUV to haul around you and your missus, when you could buy a toyota camry for 10k?" He shut up.

I cut phone line with my knife. That's what it's for, cutting things.

Likewise. The only thing I regret cutting was some steel wire with my Kershaw ZT0400 since the edge folded, but the Sharpmaker fixed it up with a little effort.

I disagree with most on here.

I carry many different knives. I'm a huge Spyderco Nut.

I have carried
Lum tantos
Manix
Yojimbo
DODO
Ti ATR
Military
Civilian
CLB knives
BM 850s
Jot khalsa
ayoob
ronins

If you know Spyderco and it's prices you would realize some of these knives are about $30-$300.

Someone asks and I tell them straight, and then I take the time to explain it to them. If you do not explain to others they will never understand.

What a Knife truly means

When I'm done explaining to them they know quite a bit about production models, customs, semi production and understand the value of a knife.
I give many people who are my friends knives in order to show them how useful of a tool it is and to bring them closer to this community.

take care

P.S if you have a bit of time explain to others, and relate it towards their life.
After being a user, collector, accumulator, I fully understand the passion that people have in their collections of stamps, coins, watches and etc. All I can say atleast I collect something I get the pleasure of using everyday. How many people can truly say that.

I have taken the time to explain all the details you mentioned to friends & family. After awhile though,it gets pretty monotonous, that's when I just started saying the "about $50 no matter what I'm carrying".Frankly I have to agree with a previous poster, that it's just plain rude to ask people what they pay for their stuff.Maybe that's just the way I was brought up,but it makes sense to me.I wouldn't go around asking people how much money they make or how much they paid for their house. It's all in the same boat to me.I just throw'em that line($50),because it's nicer than saying "none of your business".

Usually just tell them the cost & wait to see what their reaction is. If it is a serious "Why?", then I will take the time to explain. If I get an incredulous "Why!!?", then I don't waste too much time trying to explain it to someone who has already made up their mind that it is too expensive.

Most fun I had with this was in the Army. Kid in my squad was making fun of my $125 Emerson CQC-7B. Told him to take his $5 Gas Station imitation Spyderco and pry out a jammed shell casing from the M60. Piece of the blade snapped off while my Emerson had no issues.

Now I can pull out my black lip pearl Congress from Rough Riders and proudly tell them $10.00...and they think I am lying then...lol.

My parents drilled into me that to ask a person the price of their possession was extremely rude. Sometime between then and now society has developed the idea that everything about an individual is everyone else's business.

The fact that someone else asks a question or makes a comment about something that is clearly none of their business imposes on me no obligation whatsoever to respond to them. I usually totally ignore the question and continue the conversation as if it had not been asked.

If the question or comment is about someone else, I just say, "That really is none of my business."

Thanks for all the replies. My favorite is the above from MikeH. Those who don't know me well, yet ask nosy questions, has always been a pet peeve of mine. Sometimes I have answered in such cases: "I don't answer that without my lawyer present."

I never did get the a post from the guy who EDC's the $2000+ mammoth ivory-handled piece (I know you're out there). Perhaps they considered my question rude, lol. Thanks again for all replies!
