How do you flatten spaish goat horns

I have a customer that wants some knives made from his Spanish goat horns and Im having a heck of a time tried heating them to 250 deg but all I got was a horrible stink , smoke and the horns are still no where near flat.

Just a thought but can they be boiled to soften them up? That can't smell as bad as grinding on horn.

Can you not just cut the handle shape?
If you want to flatten, cut them in half and boil for an hour or more. Immediately clamp then into some kind of fixture and let them cool to room temperature.

Bill has it right, boiling is the way to go.
