Dont alter the one you have on now. Simply buy a piece of pyrocream from Darrin Ellis http://Refractory.EllisCustomKnifeworks.com/ and epoxy it to the one you have now. To remove it heat up the current metal platen with a propane torch.
He'll get you fixed up.
I would advise against the Craftsman. If I could do it over I'd go ahead and get a coote or grizzley grinder. Better belt selection for the 2 x 72 grinders.
