how do you get your final edge put on?

Well i have another question for the masses here. What i am wondering is how you guys go about cutting the final edge onto your blade after heat treat. I did the first few on a fine belt on the grinder, but this method makes it basically impossible to get a consistent angle. Should I still do this to start or should I go straight from my finish sanding on the bevels, to a sharpening system? Could i do this will a very course lansky style system? I am now past the initial "just get it finished" stage and am now at the stage where "good enough" wont cut it for me, so i want to know how to do it properly. I tried looking around on here but didnt find what i was after as far as how you put on a cutting edge with a consistent angle.

when i put a v edge on a knife i make, i use paper wheels. i find it a lot easier to hold an angle with the wheels compared to a belt sander. you can use a bubble jig to set your angle on a belt sander or the wheels.

when i do a convex edge, i finish off the edge on the slotted paper wheel. you can get a 40 grit edge to shave if you finish it off with the slotted wheel.

Hey Grayzer,

I make pretty small folder blades, so I have to be very careful not to grind all the way to the edge to start with. That being said, once I do my final bevel grinds, I finish off with a system such as the Lansky style that you mentioned above. I've had very good results using this method.

Hope this helps. -chris

There are several ways to go at it.

I grind the final edge on the belt grinder using a bubble jig. I then take it to a buffing wheel in reverse and knock off the burr with the lighest touch. Then I strop in on a leather with compound. That makes for an edge that fine tuned and easy to maintain.

Here are a couple of video from knifemakers showing how they put an edge on their knives
