im wanting to know who of you does your plunge grinds on the flat platen and who of you on the drive wheel? It seems alot of makers do these grinds on the drive wheel which i do for hollow grinding, that im not very good at i might add, but for all other grinding i use the platen. except for convex of course. Whats your experiences with both and whats easiest for you? Im trying to find new ways to improve my own techniques with these grinds so any thoughts or tips would be appreciated. thanks justin

Not sure I understand the question but generally if I am doing a flat grind I do the plunge on the platen and if a hollow I do it on the drive wheel. Not sure you can mix the two.

My suggestion is to not worry about the plunge too much until you get better at grinding. Start you grind in a little bit from where you want your plunge to end up and get a good bevel going. Slow speed, light pressure and sharp belt will make this alot easier until you get better, you will need several passes. About 1/2 way through your grind you can bump the bevel over to where you want your plunge line to be with the edge of the belt, and then finish your grind, I would do both sides before I bump to get them even.

I am fairly new to knife making and probably a poor one to give advice. That being said I got a video- Flat Grinding by Harvey Dean- and it showed me more in one hour than I would have picked up by trial and error in a couple years. My 2c

I grind everything on the contact wheel.

If I wanted to flat grind a blade, I would hollow grind it first then go back over it with the platen.

electriczombie thats what i had in mind when i wrote this thread. ive heard of a few makers doing there flat grinds this way and i wonder if its easier by doing the majority of the work on the wheel then finishing on the platen?

Where can you get this dvd?

Check at Gene Osborne's Center Cross website. He's got a bunch of videos. You can buy or rent it online also.

One thing that you can do with the plunge is do your best with them during your regular grinding. But, don't really try to fix them until your at about 220 grit after the heat treat. At that grit and hardness you can clean things up a bit without making really big fast mistakes.

To be honest, I didn't grind a hollow before, ever... The 8" wheel was too expensive :)
