How do you guard against deer ticks in the woods?

Don't know how or who informed me of it but years ago as young Infantryman at Bragg we would bite and swallow the tip off of MRE packed or any soft book matches, something in the sulfer would stave off the tics and many other biting insects and bugs. Of course I'll probaly be diagnosed with some form of Cancer later down the road.
