How do you guys clean your "hard use" folders?

If the blade needs cleaning, I use dawn and hot water.

To clean the blade well,I I take an alcohol swab, fold it in half then take the straightened end if a paper clip to run it through. Also works for cleaning the joint.

To get water out of volumetric flask in the lab, you rinse with water followed by alcohol to absorb the water followed by ether to absorb the alcohol. The ether evaporates readily.

Seems kind of dangerous using ether that way. Be careful. Ether is highly flammable, the vapors are heavier than air and it forms explosive peroxides during long term storage. I've had an ether fire, luckily my coworker was paying more attention than me :) Good way to kill mice caght on glue traps though :)

I use Dr. Bonners soap, hot water & a brush. Dry it out with a small scrap of a paper towel. The warmth of a pocket for an hour or so dries it out, then "oil the joints."

I use boiling water or kerosene or naptha depending on what the knife was into and compressed air at 90 PSI. A drop of oil and it's back to work. Compressed does a really good job of getting crud out of a knife (or a gun). When I was in the Air Farce we used JET fuel.

A traditional knife that isn't bladed in "stainless" steel is going to stain or spot. It is what it is. The cutting chores that don't precipitate staining are those that are close to it. So, having a polishing compound on hand is ideal. Letting go of expectations of a spotless blade is idea. And enjoying the ride is most ideal. The joint of the knife is tight enough that scrubbing it out with a soapy hot brush will do 'the trick'. Otherwise, 90% isopropyl alcohol and a can of compressed air will keep the blade well and pivot free of corroding moisture and contaminants.

When we clean volumetric flasks, we invert them at a 45 degree angle on a peg rack. So the ether flows out. This procedure is used when there is a short turn around time, the flasks must be dried, but you can’t fit a towel inside. I was trying to point out a way to remove water from inside a knife without using compressed air.

Old toothbrush, dish soap then after drying, WD-40 in the joints to flush out any remaining drops of water.
