How do you guys sharpen your knives?

Convex knives I use waterstones, and a leather strop. Scandi I use sandpaper (220, 400, then a strop). "V" edge knives I use a diamond, and ceramic rods.

Yep, good advice is all over the place in that section. I personally freehand sharpen. Do reprofiling with diamond stones and finish with Shapton waterstones. For quickie touch-ups I use a Sharpmaker now and then. Strop sometimes, depending on the edge usage.

Smith's Tri-6 Arkansas Tri-Hone Sharpening Stones.

BC777, how long have you been using a 'Smith's Tri-6', do you like it... good results?
I'm about to pull the trigger on a 'Smith's Tri-8' for $60.00 free shipping no tax.

Thanks for letting me know your opinion/results/experience with yours.

Belt grinders, waterstones, diamond stones, ceramic stones, sandpaper, and oil stones. :D

It depends on what results I'm looking for but typically my favorites include:

- Alumina Ceramic Rod for touch ups/raising a quick burr (when a knife is already relatively sharp and needs a touch up)
- Paper Wheels for fast reprofiling as well as polishing already sharp edges (ie: straight from the factory edge)
- Edge Pro - for full reprofiling (was using a lanksy previously...)
- Arkansas Pocket Stone for small touch ups
- Sandpaper for convexing edges
- Cinder Blocks for those really toothy edges ;):D
- An old blue jean strop board I made for free from an old pair of pants and a piece of maple flooring

I've got a few other items like diamond stones and lapping film sheets but find I haven't used them much...

I like DMT diamond hones and ceramic crock sticks. I've got a pretty wide assortment of sharpening stones as well.

I made my own sharper. here is a picture of it so maybe you can do the same thing. my leek was dull and it has brought back the edge.

Belt sander, diamond stones, ceramic stones, lansky system, fixed angle rod sharpener (not sharpmaker) it all depends on my mood and how much time I have and what edge I want for which system I will use.

In order of use: sandpaper, whetstone, ceramic rod. A really dull knife gets all three, regular maintenance uses just the rod.
