How do you handle a "Oops, I lost the box" after sale/trade?

I'm getting ready to move and I'm very unorganized lately.

I've advertised a few knives and a watch LNIB or "With box" lately, only to discover, once someone agreed to buy the knife/watch, that I couldn't find the box I said came with it.

To my credit, each time I've been able to rummage enough to, eventually find the box. No problems with my sales/trades. (I THOUGHT I was sure where it was, just had to dig a LOT deeper.)

But, what if?

What if you advertised something LNIB and then fricken' couldn't find the box that you were sure you knew where it was?

(Believe me, I wouldn't advertise something as LNIB unless I knew where the box was, but it's amazing how fast you can lose something during the moving process.)

Lower the price?
Ask the guy if he cared if it had the box? (This must sound sneaky to the buyer and I wouldn't want that.)

id be honest about it and tell him what happened. if the box is important, as it may be, id offer a discount or a full refund.

I would be up front and explain what had occurred. Misplacing stuff happens to everyone! I would give the buyer the chance to back out of the sale or give him the option to renegotiate the price.

At the end of it, as long as the buyer or would of been buyer was nice about it, I would leave a positive note in the GB&U for them with the details.

Great answers! This should serve as a good guide to people in the future for those who care to do a search about their problem.

If, in the future, I ever fail in this regard, I totally agree and will follow your recommendations.

Nice job.

Number 1 in all deals is communication.

I'd let him know about the box and give all the options. Then the buyer can decide if he still wants to do the deal.

I don't do much business on the forums, but I wouldn't advertise it as LNIB unless I had it in the box right then! It would just avoid any hassles later on. YMMV.

Yup. The time spent in making sure what you are listing is complete, would avoid this uncomfortable and potentially damaging transaction.

All the answers above are correct. The core solution to the problem is the responsibility to be organized ahead of time.

That said, we've all made a mistake. Handle it with integrity.

I suppose you could send the buyer an E-mail and say:

"I cannot find the box"

Might help............................:D :D
