How do you hike?

I say hike your own hike. Speed up when you want, slow down when you want. If you're in a group, agree on a destination and meet there.

Hike your own hike.

I usually always hike by myself. I like to take my time and explore game trails, etc., & most of those that I have joined up with are mostly into moving quick and not straying from the point A to point B plan, so they get the most physical benefit from their hike.

I own a botanical garden and use the university's GPS coordinates for finding the plants I am looking for.
I usually boogie until I get to the general area I need to be in and then just completely chill and hang out.
Up goes the Hammock, out comes a "lefty' and my camera.
Going back I have had my "urge" fulfilled and just kind of meander along.
Often the pack is considerably heavier coming out.;)

I don't mind company but usually nobody is dumb enough to go with me.

I used to have a neighbor who had a flexible schedule and liked to hike. We liked the same trails. The problem was that not only would she make a banzai run for the turn-around point, she wouldn't even slow down then. I'd want to sit and have a drink of water while enjoying the view. She would pivot on her heel and turn back without even breaking stride.

Needless to say, we didn't end up hiking a lot....

Both, but to be precise I suppose I must be “A”. The reason being that when hiking I have goals and objectives. I don't want to be eating, pitching camp and so on in a less than desirable spot, and the only way for me to achieve that effectively is to have some sort of plan. That said, I get out a lot and range over terrain and distance that some see as a hike whereas I don't. I'm just roaming. There's no schedule as such for that. The trip just accords with my vacillation. On that, I do type “B” much more often.

Same here. I don't actually do much hiking just for the hell of it. We are usually climbing stuff, conquering summits or just making aproaches for rock/ice routes. I enjoy some lighter stuff once in a while though. The thing is that above treeline there isn't much stuff to stop and look at besides the sights.

It depends. If I have one particular point I have to reach, I will just hump it until I arrive. OTOH, I got into the environmental science program at my university, so I stop and take pics of flora, fauna, and geological interests just to keep myself sharp. I actually have written every one of my papers for my zoology and botany classes on anomalies that I found while hiking in the field. Generally, I prefer to vary my pace and hike with someone who can handle that. My ex-gf and I used to hike alot and I would meander through the woods and then haul up the cut paths and such...

If I pack in some place, I like to make my destination quickly and then go exploring around once i setup camp. On the way back I tend to take in things more and go off trails to look around because the pack weighs less going out.
I enjoy the company of others when hiking but it's not often two or more people share the same hiking habits. Meeting others at a predetermined campsite is my preferance.
