I like the "Intermediate" chests - the chests that go in the middle without wheels and without lids. The Intermediate chests tend to have 2" - 3" drawers which both work great for knife storage.
I have been using Craftsman "Intermediate" chests for a few years now and can't imagine a much better arrangement for my needs. And Full extension ball bearing drawers can't be beat.
I use Intermediate chests because they can be locked and don't have a top lid like most tool boxes. Some might like a top lid, but I put mine under a credenza that fit perfectly.
The following two pics are old pics (this topic comes up every few months, but I like it.

2" - 3" drawers work best for me.
The 2" drawers are great for lying blades flat or for standing smaller knives up in a rack. The 3" drawers are a bit of a waste if lying blades on their sides, but are good for standing larger knives vertical in a rack.
For the most part, 2" drawers do most for me.
This picture shows a 2" drawer with some larger knives flat and smaller knives vertical in a small wooden rack I made on the table saw:
My cabinet size is 26" wide x 16" deep. The drawers are about 22.25" wide x 14.25".
Most small knives will stand up in the 2" drawers.
Larger knives with larger guards will mostly stand upright in the 3" drawers.
Large Double-Quillion knives tend to have to lay flat.
My Battle Rat sized blades just barely fit front to back.
Anything longer like a FFBM or DogFather needs to go side to side in the drawers I have.
