How do you hold your work when forging?

One of the first rules I learned in blacksmithing was "If you cant hold it, you cant hit it" I really like the tom's tongs that I've got. Sure I can make my own tongs easy enough, but my shop time is so limited that for the price of the tongs already made, they were a no brainer for me =)

just to be clear, before I order a pair of z box toms tongs, the 1/4" dimension is for the maximum thickness of steel the jaws can accommodate, and the 1" or 5/4" dimension is for the minimum width of a steel bar it can accommodate?? is that correct?

Yes.

I think you will be quite happy with "U" box or "Z" box Tom tongs. The main difference in them is blade length. The Z-box are better for longer blades and working with long barstock. If you only do standard blades where the whole knife is only 8-12", the U-box is a little better balanced.
