How do you know it’s time to sell a knife?

Setting a limit on the total number forces me to sell the least favorite after making a new acquisition.
I just don’t like having an ever increasing hoard.
So I buy something new and if I like it and I’m at capacity then something else is sold. Works for me.
I do zero growth with clothes and books, and I think I am actually ahead of that with knives. Huge reduction in the past few months.

It's hard for me to become completely uninterested in a knife I have no matter how big my collection already is. Therefore it does not work for me that "sell the knife if you are no longer interested in it."

I agree with AF AF that it is a better idea to set an upper limit of $$ invested into this hobby. Wanna buy another knife? Got sell one first. That however is also difficult to stick to especially when you have spare coins and when the other good half does not monitor you. ;)

I'm gonna try to ask me every Sunday morning when I wake up: "what will happen to my collection if I suddenly die tomorrow?" This will probably slow my purchases down a bit and prompt me to sell some.;)

What is this concept of "selling a knife" that you speak of? Lol

I have gone through phases of selling off portions of my collection. Sometimes major portions. And I regret it. So now I analyze each sale very carefully before I make a decision. I'm tossing around the idea of selling a couple right now actually.

I thought I would always have and keep around 30+ Spydercos. Then one day I ordered a CRK Sebenza. It was perfection. So I slowly sold off some Spydercos, then I found out about Rick Hinderer. Sold some more, picked up a Hinderer, then I finally sold the rest of my collection for one more Hinderer. I blame it all on, in my opinion, more expensive and better knives. Now my collection only includes CRK, Hinderer, and a Keen, and a couple fixed blades. I will never sale these ones.

Funny, my experience has been the opposite. Most often when I re-buy a knife I end up selling it. I remember what I didn't like about it.
Then you don't remember anything from your first purchase.

I'm getting older and pickier. Plus, I'm not a wealthy man.

I remember some things ;). But yes I forget something or convince myself that I'll like it. It's like getting back together with an ex.
In the more recent past I've modded some knives the second time around to correct the issue that bothered me.

Yea, I've bought and sold a lot of knives. Then, about a year or so later it'll hit me that I shouldn't of sold a particular knife. I realized that a few years back and I now have bought all but one of those that I let slip thru my grubby little paws. If I never buy it back I'll be alright.
