How do you like my new rifle?

This is my little project, a Mosin Nagant 1891-30 converted to a scout rifle. I got the MN for free, because the woodwork was rotted away, and there was spots of corrosion.
I always wanted a scout rifle, and knowing this was a Hungarian rifle with non matching numbers made in 1951, i decided to convert it to a scout.
I know some people frown upon such modifications but i decided to go forward.
As i don't live in the US i cut the AOL of the rifle to 1 meter (it's legal where i live), removed the old stock, cut and re-crowned the barrel, used an ATI monte carlo stock, mounted a illuminated EER scout scope (2.5x30), replaced the bolt with a bend handle bolt, and fitted a third sling swivel. I also mounted a quick detach Harris bi-pod.
I have shot about 50 rounds true the rifle. I encountered sticky bolt with the five first shot so i polished the extractor and the chamber. Now it works flawless. Muzzle flash is impressive but recoil is not hard.

My next addition will be a ching sling on the rifle.

Due to very strict gun laws in my country the MN falls into a special category of rifles. Due to a flaw in the gun laws they can be purchased without a permit which is VERY hard to get in my country. I wanted a rifle with punch (7.62 x 54 R), that could function as a multi purpose rifle.
I believe i have achieved this goal.
Only the weight and the external bi-pod detracts from the original specs of the "Scout rifle" concept developed by Mr Cooper.
Buying a new Steyr rifle would cost me 3500 US dollar in my country, and would be a long and expensive journey.

NICE! I Modified my 91/30 as well but not that extreme. I bedded the action and about an 1" of the barrel and put a mount and 4x32 illuminated LER on it. It was a tight shooter before but now it's REALLY tight. I'm going to be putting a new trigger on mine as well and that should tighten it up beautifully.

How're the groups?

When I first saw the thread, talking about butchering an old milsurp, I was preparing to barf. People say there's millions of them and they cost $60, why not. Well, once their gone, they won't be cheap anymore. But, given your prediciment and the rifles condition, that is a great looking rifle. Nice job. What country are you in?

sweet I want to get an original nagant sniper rifle with the pe or pu scope. good looking rig.

can you get a sound supressor in your country. I don't know where you are but in several countries it's way cheaper and easier to get one than in the US. That would fix the muzzle blast issue and improve ballistics from what looks like a very short barrel.

Really nice looking scout rifle. What brand is the scope? Is it tritium illuminated or does it work off a battery? What does it weigh?

My old roomie had a M-N in less than perfect shape. I took it out once when we went shooting at a dump and my word.... We had AK's and MAK's and various pistols to shoot but this rifle took the prize for outright ear splitting loudness.

Cool mod you did on that, I do not see why anyone would frown on modding an M-N , they are not near as precious as say.... a Garand.

What gets me is the country you live in it is hard to own a gun but okay to cut it down to whatever size you want ? :D (IMO if one owns a gun they should be able to do whatever they please with it, aside from harming others).

I remember reading in one of the original editions of "Small Arms of the World" by Walter H. B. Smith many, many years ago that the firing pins on Moisin-Nagant rifles had a bad habit of kicking back through the bolt into the eye of the shooter, killing him. Smith included it as a warning, but never having owned one, I never paid that much attention to the warning. Is it really true and, if so, under what circumstances?

And yes, muzzle flash is impressive and will spiff out a ball of flame the size of a inflatable beach ball. It will also throw up dirt and debris a few meters in front of the muzzle.
it looks like a combination of a long range rifle and short range flame thrower at the same time.

Great job on the Scout. I love the concept so much that I have two, a Savage and a Remington Model 7.

Two questions: I can't tell from the pic how you mounted the scope, and could you mount iron sights on the rear of the receiver?

i used a scopemount for a 12 mm rail that i mounted and JB-welded on the 12 mm dovetail that holds the rear sight of the MN. They are see thrue mounts so i could add a peepsight and a front sight onto the rifle. But this will need to hard solder a peep and finding the correct front sight. It's already on my wanted list.
Although the whole set up is not persé cost efficient, it's always great to see a project come together.

This is the scope mount i used, bought from Ebay, works great. I am currently using a NC-star (formerly Tasco) 2.5x30 mm rheostat battery operated LER scope. It's a cheap scope, but i couldn't risk putting a 200 $ scope on a project in the making. I will replace it with a high quality scope if it fails, but untill now it works just fine.

shame that belgium doesn't let you have sound supressors. I think it's up in finland or sweden or norway that considers them noise pollution control and makes them about as hard to buy as a car muffler.

Nice looking conversion.

The closest I came to shooting one of those was a near disaster- A friend of mine had one, and we went out to a gravel pit to shoot. He did not know anything about guns, or when it had last been cleaned. I ran a patch down the barrel and it came out shredded and rusty! God only knows what would have happened if He had fired it.
