I've been a VoiceStream/T-Mobile user for ~3 years. I like their service and the web access is great. The best part is they use SIM Cards. When you upgrade to a better phone, you just swap the SIM Card from your old phone to the new one and bingo, your set to go. All your info is on the new phone.

We have had ATT wireless since it was called Sun Com here in Ky. We live in a fringe area ( read out in the sticks), and using our phone at home calls for us to go outside. Some providers wouldn't even write a contract in our area I fixed that by buying a Auto antena and oputting it outside. I like the caller area we have and the amount of minutes for $40.00 per month 3we get (450 plus free weekends and nights) nation wide caller plan, I,ve never had a roqaming or long distance charge while travling, and recently updated my old Nokia to a new V-60 motarola for $75.00. Then as given a $75.00 rebate.

Here's my experience.

I had AT&T since cellphones were first offered. They were LA Cellular before AT&T. Things were sort of ok, but AT&T just didn't keep up with the times. I used to be happy with a drop out now and then owing to new technology, but other companies started getting better AT&T didn't keep up.

I then switched to Cingular (which I love) and Verizon (which is so-so). In my neighborhood (Los Angeles), Cingular coverage is excellent. Verizon coverage is ok, but not as good as Cingular for me. I guess it's all about location. About two months ago, I threw in another curve ball. I added a phone to my Cingular account and noticed right away that coverage wasn't as good. That's when I learned that not all phones are created equal. Since then, I've experimented with five different phones and coverage is all over the place. By and large, the ones with antennas work the best. Some that have internal antennas suck badly.

Now I'm happy with Cingular again-- I've settled on a couple of phones that have antennas and great reception. So why do I even have Verizon you ask? Well, it's all about location.... in some places Verizon has a better signal, and in other places Cingular has the edge. Since I travel a lot, and being connected to the world is important to me, I must have a reliable back-up phone.

My personal favorite is Cingular. Cingular GSM phones work world wide and can be changed back and forth on a whim using a SIM chip. Verizon is a good choice for overall good coverage across the USA, but not internationally. Also, I am using Verizon's new Push-to-Talk plan to keep connected at work.

Why not just give your phone the boot? Sounds like your phone is acting up. I learned that cell phones are not all created equal. You might try a new, up to date phone. Especially one that has an antenna. With Cingular, it is as simple as removing the SIM chip and putting it in another phone. I have five different phones here, and I swap SIM chips all the time. I have a cool camera phone, and I like it for taking pictures, but it has really crappy reception and I miss calls all the time. If I am waiting on an important call, I switch out the SIM chip to a different phone what has an antenna and never drops calls. I'd check your phone before I chucked the service.

Bob,
I'm definitely going to ditch the phone, even if I give Cingular a chance, but as far as I know, getting my voicemail shouldn't be affected by my phone's performance.
Anyway, I highly doubt that whoever I speak to at Cingular is going to like my offer (what it will take to keep me as a customer).
Thanks :)

im my area, the only choices are, at&t, verizon, sprint, and tmobile. ive had all of them, and welp, they all suck.

Cell service always varies by location...In the Bay Area, I have AT&T, and it was working great. Now, though, it drops calls too much.

Had Cingular, and the service was complete garbage: Constant circut busy errors, billing error, newtork failure errors, etc.

T-Mobile in the Bay Area leases towers/airtime from Cingular, so that's not going to work. MetroPCS also leases from Cingular, so that's out.

Sprint doesn't work where I live....Nextell never works right, in my experience.

I had Verizon, once, but don't really remember how it was. I may try them out, again...

I hate Cingular, lousy service and poor coverage....is there an echo in here???? :D

Yeah, it depends on location for sure. I just switched last week from Verizon to T mobile. I was so frustrated because I can almost see a tower from my house but I was having a devil of a time getting reception in my house. My step daughter was here for Christmas and had no problem making call from the BASEMENT on her T mobile phone.

Now, I was very happy with the service from Verizon but the reception wasn't making it. The nearby tower turns out to be one of T mobile's which is why I am now enjoying excellent service even in my house. It really does have to do with who owns the towers near you.

Before going with Cingular, do yourself a favor and ask them to borrow a demo phone. They will loan you one so you can take it aroudn for a couple of days and see what the signal strength is in the areas you frequent. I did this and that's when I discovered that it wasn't just my old phone that wasn't pulling in the signal.

BTW, the new phones are pretty outrageous. Trade in that old piece of junk you have and check out the new Samsung 105 series.....;)

Thanks again, everybody.
I haven't been able to do anything yet, as what started as a layoff, with only two scheduled days this week, and plenty of free time, turned into 2 day shifts, 2 evening shifts, and 2 night shifts (jet lag, anyone?), and I'll probably work 72-88 hours the next few weeks, since I traded shifts to take an open one on my regular shift that I am normally not eligible for. We are union, and go by an overtime board--I have 24 hours, everyone else is over 150, so I decided to play catch-up.
"Hell month" starts tomorrow, so the phone is on hold.
Enough typing. I need my rest!

I have AT&T GSM for a Sony Ericsson T68i. It's fine... when I have service. I got the phone and AT&T in July 2002 and I have NEVER been able to get service in my house. And no, I don't live in the middle of no where. Verzion, Alltell, etc all work... I have to drive about a mile for my phone to work. Is that messed up? Mile away it works and here nothing! UGH!

The price I pay for GSM phones ugh.

I will switch to T-Mobile once this new Sony Ericsson phone comes out (T630). I'm going to guess T-Mobile isn't going to work here either - but they're cheaper.
