How do you look for a blade?

I have been preoccupied for a while with other things and want to get back into trying to make knives. My friend is a taxidermist and I would like to make him a knife for his new shop. I don't know if he'll use it, but I would still like to tell him that the blade is a made by (insert well known blade man. here) so it isn't a run of the mill knife kit. Is there any well known knife manufacturers that sell just blades?
Thanks Chris

take a look at jantz supply catalogue, they have a ton of knife blanks for pretty good prices.

That's actually what spawned my confusion. It's a little hard to tell who makes what, there is no definitive descriptions of the steel types, nor manufacturing processes. I recognized the Russel name associating it with AG Russel, but then saw the blanks were only $12 or so. Helle was the other name that seemed to be categorized, but I don't know anything about them.

If it was an A.G. Russell knife I think it would have A.G. Russell on the blade not just Russell. Also, Dan Koster here on these forums has been selling some kits. I don't know if he has any left, but this is a link to his thread.

Most makers do not sell marked blanks. Unfortunately if we did sell them it is very hard to tell how they would be finished. I do know of several who will make you a piece of Damascus but you would have to grind, HT and finish it. AG Russel is a very well known retailer of production and semi custom knives. They might be a good choice if you are not ready to make your own. However if you have the equip to put a handle on then you probably have what it would take to make one. Make this your first start to finish knife??

Good Luck

figure how much you want to do.. then get one of those damascus gurus to make you a nice blade... at any level you want.. and then finish it..

I saw a site from some dude in brazil I think it was... long hair.. that dude can make a damascus knife out of toothbrushes!!!.. he has crazy amazing skill.. don't remember the site..sorry. That is what I would do...you will have a great and very unique knife and yuo can add your own touch to it..

You talking about Ariel Salaverria? He has long hair :)

If he intends on using it, you could make him a knife from scratch and not worry about if it is pretty, maybe you could ask some local makers about helping with the heat-treatment.

Nutria-man- I don't know many south american knifemakers, but Rodrigo Sfreddo is Brazilian and is on here, I don't think he has long hair though. You may be thinking of Ariel Salaverria from Argentina, who frequents this forum (edit: Kim Lau beat me to it :) ). But it is all good.

I don't think I could make him a knife good enough for him to want to use he has some specific blades he stick to for caping out and stuff like that, so maybe a damascus would be best. I know this is an open ended question, but what should I expect to pay?

Thanks for everyone's input.

Have you looked at Fallkniven?

Chris is there some design you have in mind, it may be able to be made for you by someone right here as well. I have sold just blade blanks to people they are ground and heat treated and could be done so they are just ready for handles and final sharpening. Doug

Not really, I kinda just jumped right back into the fire here. I guess I would lean towards a small skinner or hunter for my friend since he is a taxidermist.

I strongly agree with Chuck on the issue of a maker selling a finished blade blank that is marked. For the most part, a maker's reputation is his/her pride and joy, and most of us defend it jealously. The reason is that at some point in our careers, we have sold a finished blade with our name on it, only to have someone finish out the knife in a manner that is no where near our personal standards. People will not/do not stop to think that someone else might have completed the knife, all they know is the name on it, and go "Yuk! that looks like a$$." Thats the reason you don't see established makers selling blade blanks that are marked.

I still produce finished blades for others, but I do so with the understanding that they will not be marked as mine. Once the blade is completed, its only a matter of hours before I have a completed knife, therefore, the cost is nearly that of a completed knife.

I understand that completely. I wasn't necessarily in search of a marked blade, as I was one that wasn't a chinese POS. I think I may just try my first attempt at stock removal and pay someone on here to HT it. This way I can take credit for the whole thing and if it looks like crap I'll just keep it.

my kit knives are marked with their own logo...marking it as a kit knife.

for example:

i don't have any extras right now...but do plan on having more eventually.
